Cardboard packaging is all the rage. And we are not the only ones to say so. The 2nd European Packaging Perception Study by Pro Carton, the European Association of Cartonboard Manufacturers, for this year 2021, highlights that when choosing between a product packaged in plastic or in cartonboard, 79% of those surveyed opt for the latter, compared to 9% who would choose the plastic presentation.
Several factors contribute to the popularity of this material in packaging. The most decisive is probably its sustainability. Biodegradable, it can be recycled and reused as a recycled raw material within the circular economy paradigm. In Spain, for example, no less than 75% of the paper and cardboard consumed is recycled, according to figures from AFCO, the Spanish Association of Corrugated Cardboard Packaging Manufacturers.
Advantages of cardboard as a packaging material
Choosing cardboard as a packaging material is an act of EcoResponsibility. But, in addition, cardboard offers numerous advantages to obtain better results in the preparation of orders for companies of all sizes:
- Cardboard boxes protect all types of goods against knocks, surface damage, moisture and temperature fluctuations.
- The packaging board in stackable and palletisable formats facilitates storage and dispatch tasks.
- The adhesion of adhesive tapes is optimal in combination with cardboard boxes.
- The packaging board functions as a vehicle for conveying brand image: it can be customised by printing coloured messages and logos on the outside and inside.
- Most cardboard packaging is delivered flat, which helps to better control stock and save space in the warehouse.
Types of cardboard in packaging products
There are different types of cardboard suitable for packaging, such as cartonboard, solid board, stone board or couché board. However, the best known, as it is the basis for the manufacture of American boxes, is corrugated cardboard. Corrugated board is available in various thicknesses:
- Single-flute corrugated board. For light and not very fragile objects.
- Double-flute corrugated board. With 50% more strength than the previous one, it protects heavy and fragile loads with a maximum weight of 40kg.
- Reinforced double-channel corrugated board. Its resistance is increased by 50% with respect to the double channel. Recommended for export and for journeys in difficult conditions, it can withstand up to 70kg.
- Triple channel corrugated board. Ready to take on challenges: 30% stronger than the reinforced double-wall corrugated board, it can hold up to 500kg of load and is commonly used for long-term storage.
