[DE] Determine the right size for work gloves

3min read 14/06/2023
The hand is a highly sensitive and complex “working instrument”. Most work accidents involve the hand, so work gloves are an important part of personal protective equipment (PPE). Work gloves for professional use are therefore subject to strict guidelines and are tested, categorised and labelled accordingly. In addition, a good glove should also fit optimally, only then do you protect optimally and maintain fingertip feeling and grip strength. Determining the right glove size is therefore important in many respects.

Glove size

Just slip into your colleague’s work gloves? In case of doubt, that’s better than not wearing any at all. But everyone who has to wear work gloves for a longer period of time knows that suitable gloves in the right size are indispensable. If the gloves are too small, it is difficult to grip them. After a while, you may even feel a temporary numbness in your fingers. If the glove is too big, precision suffers – and you work in constant fear of losing the glove. The most common glove sizes for adults are between work glove size 6 and work glove size 11. . To ensure that women and men can grip with equal strength, the two standard glove sizes 7 (women) and men (9) have become established. If absolute dexterity is required, latex or vinyl gloves, which are also available in “half” sizes, are ideal.

Sizing gloves

We have developed and made available for download a simple, very effective template that helps to determine the size of gloves! No need to measure or convert – just place your hand on the template and read off the size!

Size chart gloves

As an alternative to the template, the work glove size can be determined with the help of a tape measure and the work glove size chart. To do this, simply place the tape measure around the hand at the widest point (without the thumb). If no tape measure is available, simply place a thread or string around the hand and then measure with the help of a ruler.

Test method for gloves

By the way: To ensure that a glove restricts the mobility of the hand as little as possible, a test method has been developed, found at the Bundesverband Handschutz e.V.: “For this purpose, five solid, smooth-turned stainless steel test rods of length 40 mm and with a diameter of 5 mm, 6.5 mm, 8 mm, 9.5 mm and 11 mm respectively are placed on a flat surface. A tester shall pick up the appropriate rod around its circumference between his gloved index finger and thumb three times in succession within 30 seconds without excessive palpation without an aid. The test result corresponds to the smallest diameter of the rod.”

How do I find the right glove size?

It sounds so simple and yet it is neglected time and time again: only a suitable glove offers good protection against accidents at work. If the gloves are too big or too small, the grip strength and grip accuracy will decrease. You want to order work gloves but don’t know your size? The most common glove sizes for adults are between 6 and 11. To ensure that both men and women can grip with equal strength, the two glove sizes 7 (women) and men (9) have become established.
