If you’re new to the world of cardboard, it’s good to know the differences between single, double and triple corrugated. The short answer to the question is: the number of corrugated layers and the thickness of the board, which in turn determines the resilience of the material. In this blog post, we also provide a longer answer, for those who need to decide which grade of corrugated board is the right choice for your particular products.
How to choose the right corrugated board grade?
RAJA offers boxes in four different types of corrugated board: single-wall, double-wall, reinforced double-wall and triple-wall. Choose the quality depending on the different characteristics of the products to be packed. Take into account weight, fragility and conditions during transport and storage. Will the box be stored or shipped, and does it need to be stackable?
If you are shipping products to the other side of the world, you need to take into account the mode of transport, the number of transport routes, whether the box needs to be palletised and whether there are any special conditions that the corrugated quality needs to endure, such as high humidity or changes in pressure.

What does corrugated board consist of?
Corrugated board (with or without fluting) is the cornerstone of most cardboard packaging and also the packaging of choice for consumers. Corrugated board consists of an outer protective layer, a corrugated layer and an inner layer, a total of three components. If the carton has two or more corrugations (double or triple corrugated), there are at least two layers of inner paper.
The outer layer must have properties such as protection against moisture and temperature variations, while at the same time being strong enough to allow the box itself to be stacked. In addition, it needs to have an optimum surface area for packing tape to adhere well, while allowing for the addition of special prints such as logos and patterns.
Why is corrugated board so popular?
As mentioned above, corrugated board is the packaging of choice for consumers, far ahead of plastic, wood and metal. The benefits of corrugated board are many:
- It is easy to work with
- It is a lightweight material
- High elasticity
- Good protection due to the shock-absorbing effect
- Good air circulation
- Protects against moisture
- Can be tailored to almost any need
- Environmentally friendly and reusable
