The importance of export packaging (II) Protecting the contents

2min read 24/11/2014

After choosing the container we will use for our product, it is essential to protect the contents with suitable packaging material. We must ensure that the movements it undergoes during transport do not damage it.

It is important to fill the empty spaces so that our goods are perfectly fixed and protected inside the box, for which we can use

  • bubble wrap
  • kraft paper
  • filler chips
  • corrugated cardboard
  • air pillows

on some occasions it is essential to protect the corners or edges of our packaging, for this we can use polyethylene profiles that cushion the blows and can also be reused

  • To protect surfaces from scratches (e.g. on glass), film or foam bags can be used.
  • If we ship loose products, tubular plastic or foam netting is the ideal protection.
  • If you are exporting metal parts or need water-repellent insulation, waxed or tarred wrapping paper is suitable.

  • If it is considered hazardous material, there are boxes approved according to UN regulations so that they are legally identified as such and have the appropriate treatment. For these hazardous materials, it is also recommended to insulate them in bags that can contain any leaks that may occur during transport.
  • Perishable foodstuffs or other products sensitive to temperature variations should use isothermal packaging together with cold accumulators.
  • For export to warm countries, polypropylene tape with natural rubber or PVC adhesive mass is recommended instead of water-based.
  • If exporting to cold countries, the recommended adhesive tape is acrylic-based polypropylene, and some pressure should be applied to the tape to ensure proper adhesion.

  • For bulky or heavy shipments (over 40 kg), technical tapes(duct tape, reinforced tape or hot melt glue) are suitable to reinforce the seal.
  • Personalised adhesive tapes can be interesting for quick identification of products, but also as a security measure since they cannot be replaced in case of removal.
  • Document bags can be used to carry the required information, instructions or indications for handling and delivery conditions.
