what is bio-based packaging?

Bio-based packaging is packaging that is made, in whole or in part, from renewable raw materials of natural origin.

what is bio-based packaging made of?

Bio-based packaging is made from plant-based components, which are considered renewable due to their ability to regenerate quickly, at a faster rate than they are consumed by humans. The most commonly used for bio-based packaging include:

• Cellulose, which comes from wood or cotton, and is a key element in the production of wooden, cardboard or paper packaging.
• Sugar cane, which is highly prized in food packaging and has come to the fore with the rise of take-away and home-delivery food as a result of COVID-19 restrictions.
• Starch, extracted from maize, potato, wheat or rice.

is bio-based packaging biodegradable and compostable?

Despite the eco-friendly nature of bio-based packaging, we should not make the mistake of thinking that, since they are made from renewable raw materials, they must necessarily be biodegradable and compostable. how to integrate bio-based packaging into your company’s day-to-day business?

The great thing about bio-based packaging is that you don’t have to make any major changes to integrate it into your business activities. Adopting it into your day-to-day operations just requires a little thought and commitment. Where to start?

1. Identify bio-based alternatives to replace the packaging items you currently use. A good example would be to replace PVC adhesive tapes with solvent kraft paper, as suggested in the previous section. In this way, you will put into practice one of the 5Rs of packaging!
