[ES] Palletless packaging: what is it, advantages and disadvantages?

5min read 28/01/2025

Have you heard of palletless? This trend is based on not using pallets for packaging in order to save space and weight. Although it may seem like an advantage, this system is not always recommended, as it can lead to a number of problems. Here’s what you need to know about palletless before deciding to incorporate it into your shipping logistics.

What is palletless?

As its name suggests, palletless is a method of packaging that dispenses with the use of the pallet. To secure the load , it uses film shrink film is used to secure the load by means of automated machines. These machines transport the load and, by means of a system of application, cutting and rotation of the film, cover and group the contents in a compact manner.

What are the advantages of pallet-free packaging?

The absence of pallets in product shipments can have several benefits:

  • Cost savings. By eliminating the pallet, the cost of the pallet is also eliminated.
  • Reduction in the size and weight of the package. Following on from the previous point, the reduction in volumetric weight means cost containment.
  • Optimisation and increase of free space. More space is available for both storage and transport for shipments.
  • Less manpower is required. By using an automatic and mechanised system, the number of workers required for its implementation is reduced.
  • Speed in preparation. With this automation system, a faster pace in the preparation of packages is achieved.
  • Reduction of contamination. Smaller bundle sizes allow more goods to be included in each shipment, reducing the carbon footprint, making it an EcoResponsible option.
  • Protection of contents. The cargo is fully protected against risks such as environmental agents, theft and loss.

But what are the disadvantages of packing without using pallets?

However, it is worth bearing in mind what the downside of not using pallets is:

  • Machinery costs. To save on the use of pallets, it is first necessary to invest an additional sum in a new mechanical packaging system.
  • Extra safety and widespread use of the pallet. The pallet is still a very versatile and safe method of transport and is the standard in any supply chain.
  • Weight and size of the load. Some shipments are so heavy or bulky that transport without pallets is simply not feasible.

When is it more beneficial to use palletless?

If you are thinking of choosing this system, these are the most favourable situations to use it:

  • Light loads. Items that are light and do not require an additional support structure can be shipped without the use of pallets.
  • Goods with irregular sizes and shapes. The use of pallets is convenient when shipment loads have conventional shapes or dimensions within standard palletisable dimensions. In cases where this homogenisation does not exist, dispensing with the pallet can be a useful option, provided that the securing system, such as strapping, is well applied.
  • Stacking of bags. For supplies related to food, agriculture or construction, sacks are often used. Bags can be stacked directly on top of each other without the use of pallets, establishing a mosaic base that allows the rest of the goods to be incorporated.
  • Sustainable sectors. Companies that are committed to reducing their environmental footprint and that have sustainability as one of their values can resort to the elimination of pallets as a matter of principle.

Why is it preferable to opt for the use of pallets in packaging?

It is not always advisable to dispense with pallets. These are the reasons why this classic system is still used:

  • Goods that need greater stability. The pallet system provides greater safety and stability to loads, reducing the risk of falls, damage and accidents when moving, thanks to its proper securing. For this reason, it is advisable to palletise loads correctly and choose a good pallet wrapping machine.
  • Easier handling. Thanks to their standard dimensions, pallets are much easier to handle, transport and load and unload within the logistics chain, even when using hand pallet trucks. This saves time and, consequently, costs.
  • Efficient use of warehouse space. Although palletless brings with it a reduction in the space occupied, the pallets are prepared for practical organisation and stacking, allowing an optimal and more efficient workflow in any type of warehouse.
  • Additional protection of the goods. The pallet structure provides extra protection for loads, reducing the risk of knocks or breakages during handling and transport.
  • Work safety. The standardised process also guarantees the safety of employees in the logistics chain, minimising the risk of injury or musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Re-use on pallets. Pallets are not single-use items, but are durable and can be reused multiple times. In other words, it is not a question of thinking of pallets as a cost, but as an investment.
