[ES] Biodegradable packaging, a step forward in your CSR strategy

3min read 22/05/2024

We can all do our bit, both as individuals and as companies, to reduce our environmental impact. In addition, regulations are becoming increasingly stringent when it comes to limiting waste generation. Therefore, considering biodegradable products as part of your Corporate Social Responsibility strategy is a good idea to develop your economic activity with an EcoResponsible approach.

What is biodegradable packaging?

Biodegradable packaging is considered to be those products that decompose into microscopic fragments thanks to the action of microorganisms in the environment, such as bacteria and fungi in the soil, or other biological agents such as the sun or humidity. This decomposition should reach 90% degradation in less than six months and the material should have no negative effects on the composting process. After this process, the result is small molecules that are harmless to nature.

In addition to being called “biodegradable”, such packaging is sometimes also called “organic”.

The biodegradable packaging standard

The standard UNE-EN 13432:2001entitled Packaging. Requirements for compostable and biodegradable packaging. Test programme and evaluation criteria for the final acceptance of packaging, is a European standard that specifies the requirements and procedures for determining the compostability and anaerobic treatability of packaging, packaging and packaging materials, taking into account four characteristics:

  • Biodegradability
  • Disintegration during biological treatment
  • Effect on the biological treatment process
  • Effect on the quality of the compost obtained.

This standard is reflected in Royal Decree 1055/2022 of 27 December on packaging and packaging waste.

Biodegradable packaging materials

These biodegradable products are designed through the use of:

  • Renewable materials such as wood, palm, bamboo, paper, cardboard, etcetera.
  • Waste from the agricultural sector transformed into packaging materials, such as corn starch or sugar cane pulp. These materials allow the creation of biodegradable plastics that are used for plastic bags or food packaging.

Difference between biodegradable and compostable packaging

Is biodegradable packaging the same as compostable packaging? Although both decompose in micro-organisms, for a biodegradable to be considered compostable, two factors must be present:

  • Its decomposition must be much faster, less than three months.
  • The result of its degradation must be converted into compost, a nutrient-rich fertiliser that can be used in agricultural areas and gardens.
