In the 21st century, the trend of the future is to look to the past. For several years now, vintage has been an increasingly recurrent style in areas such as fashion and decoration, providing a nostalgic touch that evokes the elegance of bygone times. The packaging sector also knows how to exploit this aesthetic and here are five ideas to transport you to a retro world.
Vintage style, a retro look at the past, also in packaging
Although the terms “vintage” and “retro” are often used interchangeably to refer to this style, there is a variation in their meanings. Vintage refers to items that are truly antique, while retro refers to new, modern items that mimic the aesthetics of another time. However, here we will refer to vintage style generically.

Cardboard and kraft paper, very effective vintage materials
The best way to evoke the past is to use traditional materials. That’s why it is common to find cardboard, glass, wood or fabric as raw materials in the packaging of products that are intended to have a classic look. Our reinforced postal boxes, being adhesive-free, are a good starting point to achieve a vintage look, but then you will need to add other details to complete the aesthetics.

Lighter items can be wrapped in 100% recycled kraft paper. However, for larger products and shipments, wooden boxes will not only give you security, but will also look like something out of an old warehouse.

Twine and ribbons as vintage reinforcement
Small details are very important to achieve this nostalgic look. If you need to wrap your parcels, the classic coloured kraft gift wrap paper has a natural look, is made of laid kraft and is available in six attractive and elegant shades.

You can either tie it with the raffia effect ribbon, with six colours to choose from, or with the natural raffia braid, if you are looking for a more rustic effect. If you want to give it a more sophisticated touch and finish it off with a bow, the fabric bow ribbon has a satin effect in five colours; although if you opt for something more festive, the decorated ribbons with a white polka dot pattern on a red background or on a black background are very 50’s style.

-
Stuffed, vintage inside and out
To take care of the appearance, it is not only important to take care of the outside, but also the inside of the package. The coloured tissue paper sheets not only protect the contents, but also add a touch of cheerfulness with their wide range of colours. However, these sheets are also available in white if you opt for a more sober and discreet decoration. In addition to sheets, coloured paper shavings for filling also decorate and give security to the products.

Span-Pack® filler chips are also used for quilting and filling gaps. 100% recycled, they will take you back in time as you open a box and rummage through them for the contents.

There’s nothing more vintage than labelling by hand.
To seal packages tightly, paper stickers, made from brown kraft, blend in with brown kraft packaging. However, these round coloured stickers will add a more fun touch to vintage packaging.

On the other hand, is there anything more traditional than writing recipients’ names or addresses by hand on a label? These beige cardboard labels hang from a metallic thread, are very strong and are also available in colour. You can write on these labels or directly on the cardboard packaging with the retractable-tip pens, available in black, blue and red; but if you need to write on other surfaces, there are also permanent markers in black, blue, red and green with a thicker tip.

Geami® WrapPak, a vintage effect with a difference
To conclude this series of tips, here is our most original idea: the Geami® WrapPak. This machine interweaves kraft paper and tissue paper to create protective packaging with a honeycomb motif.

It is also EcoResponsible, because it uses mono-material packaging, and you can choose between three types: electric, manual or mini. The combination of the two papers and the die-cut weft gives a retro style to your product packaging.

At RAJA® we are aware of the importance of the experience of unboxing experience and using a vintage style will set you apart from your competition. Although we cannot confirm that any time in the past was better, we offer you the ideas and our materials to make this nostalgic trip to the past.
