Need to send an important parcel and want to make sure it arrives? Choose registered letter. What are its advantages?
What is the difference between a letter and a registered letter?
A regular letter is the easiest and cheapest way you can send mail. With this type of mail, you only need to give the address for sending (the addressee), you do not need to fill in any additional forms.
However, you won’t receive a confirmation of dispatch, a tracking number (you won’t be able to track the movement of the parcel) and you won’t be able to check whether the parcel has successfully reached the addressee. The cost of sending an ordinary letter starts at 90 cents, depending on the parameters of the parcel.
On the other hand, you can opt for a registered letter whenever you need to send something with a confirmation of dispatch. As with a regular letter, you must include the addressee’s address on the item, except that you also write out a mailing slip (or, in the case of multiple mailings, a submission slip). Postal staff will provide you with the necessary forms.
Once you have handed in your registered mail for dispatch, you will receive a confirmation of dispatch, a delivery number and you can then keep track of where the parcel is and whether it has been delivered. You will pay from €2.20 for this service, depending on the size of the parcel.
Advantages of registered letter
- The Post Office guarantees delivery of the letter, but if it is lost, it will compensate you for damages up to 20 times the cost of the service,
- a registered letter serves as evidence for any legal disputes,
- you can opt for the additional service of a delivery note, which also provides confirmation of receipt by the addressee,
- you can use other additional services such as cash on delivery, hand delivery, delivery to the addressee’s own hands only.
Which envelope should I choose for a registered letter?
For ordinary documents, it is recommended to use C5 envelopeFor heavier items, there are other types of envelopes, such as C4 or B4. Coloured envelopes are not prohibited, but we recommend that you choose subtle colours so that the envelope does not look distracting.
How do I write a registered letter?
- Write the sender’s address in the top left corner of the envelope and the addressee’s address in the bottom right corner. Make sure that the address is accurate and legibly written.
Dear Madam Lucia Nováková Bajkalská 86 123 45 Bratislava |
Tip: For better legibility you can print the address on a label and stick it on the envelope.
- Write out a submission slip, which must contain the following information:

- the address of the sender and the addressee,
- the weight of the consignment,
- method of delivery (hand-delivery, delivery to the address, deposit at the post office),
- additional services (delivery service, cash on delivery, …).
- Just hand the parcel over to a postal worker and pay the delivery fee, depending on the type of parcel, destination and services chosen.
How long does it take to deliver a registered letter?
- First class registered letter on the next working day from the day of delivery
- 2nd class registered letter on the next working day from the day of submission
- Blind registered letter on the next working day from the day of lodgement
What are the options for delivery of a registered letter?
Slovak Post offers three options for delivery of registered letters:
- In your own hands: only the addressee can accept the parcel.
- To the address: the parcel can also be collected by another person at the same address.
- Deposit at the post office: the parcel is deposited for 18 days at the post office of the addressee’s choice. The addressee will be informed of the deposit of the parcel by means of a yellow slip which will arrive in his mailbox.
