[SK] How to pack goods in cold weather: Tips on how to protect shipments from moisture and frost

3min read 07/02/2025

Winter brings many challenges not only in everyday life, but also in logistics and packaging of goods. Cold temperatures, humidity and snow can have a negative impact on your shipments. How can you ensure that your packages arrive safely even in the harshest conditions? We bring you some simple but effective tips to protect your goods from inclement weather.

Insulating packaging is your best friend

Winter can be harsh, no matter what you’re shipping. Temperature-sensitive products should be wrapped with insulating materials to keep the temperature constant and prevent freezing. Bubble wrap, insulated bags or even thermo boxes will help keep items warm and safe.

Humidity? Away with it!

Temperature changes can cause moisture to condense inside packages. And that’s not good news for your products. To avoid this, use waterproof packaging or PE films to prevent moisture from seeping inside. For extra protection, try vacuum bags that literally seal the moisture out.

Desiccants: small pockets, big protection

If you want to go even further and be prepared for moisture, put small desiccants (e.g. silica gel pouches) in your pack. These little helpers absorb excess moisture and protect your products from condensation. They are particularly suitable for electronics, textiles and other sensitive goods.

Strong and durable boxes

Ordinary cardboard boxes can be vulnerable in the wet and snow. Reinforced cardboard boxes or corrugated boxes are more durable and can handle moisture and minor impacts. If you want to be extra careful, wrap the box in more plastic wrap to keep moisture completely out.

Layering packaging – more is sometimes better

When it comes to winter, multiple layers of protection is never a bad thing. Adding filler material, such as bubble wrap or paper fillers, will create a barrier between the goods and the outside cold. This not only protects the contents from freezing, but also from shocks during transport.

Bonding is important

No one wants a package to fall apart, especially in winter. Make sure you use a good quality, cold-resistant adhesive tape that retains its grip even in cold temperatures. Tape over all joints and corners so that moisture doesn’t have a chance to get inside.

Choose the right carrier

Choosing the right carrier plays a big role. Make sure your carrier is experienced in shipping in winter conditions and provides safe storage and handling. At the same time, keep an eye on the weather and plan your transport to avoid the worst conditions.

Don’t forget to label packages correctly

Label your parcels with clear labels such as ‘Fragile’ or ‘Protect from moisture’ to make it clear that they require special care. This will let the carriers know that they need to treat your package with care.

Shipping goods in winter doesn’t have to be a nightmare if you know how to do it. Proper packing is the key to protecting your parcels from moisture and frost. Using insulating materials, reinforced boxes and the right adhesive tape will ensure that your products reach your customers in perfect condition – no matter what the weather is like outside.
