[PT] Drone deliveries: a logistical future that’s already (almost) here

4min read 22/11/2024

The future is flying; so much so that it’s already here. In recent years, drones have become very useful tools for different types of work, such as search and rescue, security or the audiovisual sector. With such a versatile object, how can we not make the most of it when it comes to delivering a parcel? Something that seemed like science fiction is getting closer and closer to becoming reality.

The origins of drone delivery in the United States

Although parcel delivery with drones may seem futuristic, the first delivery carried out in this way took place in 2016, via Amazon. The e-commerce giant received a licence from the US Federal Aviation Administration to implement its Amazon Prime Air programme. Other companies, such as department store chain Walmart and Google, were soon to join in this type of delivery.

Drone deliveries arrive in Europe today

In around 30 minutes, Amazon can send parcels weighing up to 2.5kg flying through the sky at a speed of 96 kilometres per hour. Although the company maintains this regular service in College Station, Texas, and Lockeford, California, and plans a new city in the US later this year, for the company “the sky’s the limit” is an understatement. Amazon is keen to take drone delivery to Europe. The UK and Italy are its targets for this type of delivery, as it has the authorisation of the regulatory agencies in both countries and could be implemented by the end of this year.

How does parcel delivery by drone work?

There are different methods of sending parcels by drone. On the one hand, some companies use this technology to transport parcels to a warehouse and then the final journey is made by a person to the end customer. On the other hand, there is the service of direct delivery to the end customer, with the drone landing at the location chosen by the customer. Either way, the drone returns to its initial base to continue making new deliveries.

Advantages of parcel delivery by drone

Interest in this new delivery method is growing thanks to the advantages it offers both the company and the consumer.

  • It saves time and reduces delivery times. The customer receives their parcel in a short space of time. For example, the usual 30 minutes of delivery by car can be converted into 8 minutes of drone flight. Not to mention inconveniences such as traffic jams or other unforeseen events.
  • Reduces the risk of road accidents. It’s an alternative to using traditional vehicles, so it can help improve traffic conditions.
  • It can reach hard-to-reach areas. Drones can easily reach rural areas and travel over difficult terrain.
  • It’s an eco-responsiblemethod . This method of transport is environmentally friendly due to the fact that it does not emit CO2, thus reducing the carbon footprint and is ideal for last-mile deliveries.

Disadvantages of parcel delivery by drone

Despite the advantages offered by this delivery method, it’s important not to forget the limitations and restrictions that still exist:

  • High risk of collision. If this form of delivery becomes widespread, it could cause congestion on urban airways.
  • Noise pollution. Drone propellers produce a lot of noise, which can affect residents’ quality of life.
  • The weight and dimensions of packages are limited. The packages that can be sent by drones are small and do not exceed 3kg. It is therefore not currently feasible to consider delivering large or heavy packages via this system. In our catalogue, you can find boxes for postal items, envelopes for shipments and small bags and packaging that would be suitable for this method of transport.
  • Air traffic regulations and conditions. They do not yet guarantee safe conditions for transport with this technology on an industrial scale.

In conclusion, parcel delivery with drones, although already a reality, is still at a very experimental stage. The future is near and at RAJA we are always adapting to the latest developments and trends in shipping by flying. One of these days, we’ll arrive at your company from the sky.
