JIFFY GREEN – THE INNOVATIVE PADDED ENVELOPE

3min read 10/02/2022

First and foremost, Jiffy Green paper padded envelopes have become essential for e-commerce companies and retailers around the world. However, how does an envelope become so unique?

The early days of padded packaging

The Baldwin family, founders of the Jiffy’s, started out as a wood wool manufacturer in 1896 in Birmingham. These very fine, wooden yarns were first used in packaging because they were so flexible. Wood wool was big business in the UK and USA in the late 1880s and was used in many products. When sulphuric acid was added, it became very absorbent, so much so that wood wool was used in the first surgical dressings.

In this sense, the innovative Baldwin family, in 1964, started to manufacture the first Jiffy’s lined with newspaper instead of wood wool.

Today, this type of envelope is significantly more durable. Likewise, its design has undergone several changes over the years. Its paper is very resistant and the padded area is made of 100% paper, 75% of which is recycled paper. Above all, all these elements work together to create a cushioned protective zone to protect the products it contains.

What is the secret of Jiffy’s?

In 2014, this brand celebrated its 50th anniversary and was titled as one of the UK’s leading producers of packaging materials. Whereas, over time, they have developed and expanded their product range. For example: protective foam profiles, post boxes, among others. It was mainly their dedication and investment in continuous innovation that kept Jiffy at the forefront of packaging.

These envelopes protect against shocks due to the cushioning in shredded paper with double layer of 90 gr/m² kraft. This makes them very lightweight and helps reduce costs for e-commerce companies and retailers. For example, when using these envelopes to transport products such as CDs or pharmaceuticals, damage is rare. What’s more, their corners offer even stronger protection against tearing or puncture.

Sustainability

Jiffy Green paper padded envelopes are therefore made from a minimum of 75% recycled materials and are fully recyclable. With sustainability being a high priority in packaging, Jiffy has recently launched Earth Aware. Earth Aware is characterised as a new way of packaging, reducing packaging waste. This product has led to Jiffy being named runner-up in the ‘Sustainability Awards 2015’ in Packaging Europe magazine.

The future for Jiffy

Jiffy manufactures the inside of all its packaging with bubble wrap, minimising air space during transportation. According to Jiffy’s national account manager, Colin Parker, “there is a huge range of packaging options for retailers, e-commerce companies, individual personal, with an indeterminable possibility of uses.”
