CORRUGATED BOARD: TYPES AND USES IN PACKAGING

3min read 07/07/2022

Nowadays, corrugated board is one of the most demanded packaging solutions in any warehouse. As of now, it is available in several formats: for instance, rolls or sheets. In this sense, it is also the main material for the production of American boxes and other carton formats intended for the transport of heavy and/or fragile goods.

Eventually, do you know which types of corrugated board there are on the market? As well as what their possible uses are in packaging?

So, what is corrugated board?

Corrugated board is therefore also called corrugated board and is characterised by combining two elements in its structure:

  • One (or several) sheets of corrugated card board that act as a central nerve and provide extra strength to the cardboard;
  • Smooth cardboard sheets that are placed on the outside or act as separators for the different layers.

There are several possible combinations of corrugated board and coatings, which result in several variants with different degrees of flexibility and strength.

Types of corrugated board

As we add a smaller or larger amount of sheets, of corrugated board, we can obtain four types of corrugated board:

  • Simple corrugated cardboard with a single board. It is ideal for packaging fragile products before they are packaged during the order picking process;
  • Single corrugated board with two plies. It consists of one sheet of corrugated board and two outer boards. It is therefore the most common in the manufacture of flap boxes;
  • Double corrugated board is characterized by having two cracks separated by a third coating (besides including the two external ones). In this sense, we use this type of corrugated board when boxes with more resistance are needed;
  • Triple corrugated board that results from the union of three sheets of corrugated board and four sheets of cardboard. It is recommended when the goods are especially heavy.

What is corrugated board used for in packaging?

Corrugated board adopts, therefore, different presentations according to the packaging product for whose manufacture it is used; and, consequently, that it is intended for different uses.

Corrugated board presentations

Corrugatedboard in rolls: on sale in different weights and sizes. Mainly, it is widely used to protect fragile surfaces from impacts and to package heavy and bulky products because it adapts to their formats. If your company uses this product frequently, we recommend buying a hygienic roll holder that makes it easy to cut the sections to the desired size.

Corrugated board separators: for example, separators that are delivered pre-cut in various standard sizes. These separators are therefore ideal for palletising all your goods.

Corrugated board boxes: a wide range of boxes developed for the storage and transport of all kinds of goods.

Uses of corrugated board

Due to its resistance and flexibility, corrugated board offers multiple uses:

  • Corrugated cardboard in rolls is used to wrap objects of different shapes, providing optimum protection against shocks and all kinds of aggression that they may suffer during transport. It is also very useful for covering furniture, floors, walls and other surfaces. Corrugated cardboard will prevent damage caused by construction work, paving, painting, among others;
  • With corrugated board separators, the spaces inside the packages can be divided into compartments. In this way shocks and possible perforations can be avoided.
  • And, of course, corrugated board is the perfect raw material to compose any kind of box.
