Transport of beer in bottles – requirements

3min read 27/10/2020

The transport of alcohol, including beer, requires certain conditions. This applies not only to the conditions of transport itself, but also to packaging. Below is a short guide on how to transport beer correctly.

Every foodstuff, in order to be consumable and thus retain its properties, must be properly stored and also transported. Such a popular beverage as beer also has its requirements. It cannot be transported in the wrong way. Under what conditions should beer be transported?

Transporting beer – in which packaging?

During transport, two things are important: that the beer retains its properties and that the bottles in which it is transported do not break. Special cartons for shipping bottles should therefore be used for its transportation. The RAJA shop offers not only cartons for wine, but also those for beer. This type of carton is safe – it has dividers so that each bottle is protected by 4 thicknesses of cardboard. The carton and the filling are made of thick, 5-ply corrugated cardboard. Cartons are available for 6 or 12 bottles of 0.5 l or 8 of 0.33 l. The latter type is very practical as it has the option of converting the filling into a tasting stand.

Transporting beer – requirements

Contrary to the opinion of some carriers, it is not only fine spirits such as wine, whisky etc. that require special transport conditions. Beer also requires such conditions. The conditions are not as restrictive as in the case of spirits (over 24%), which are considered to be dangerous cargo as they are flammable – for this reason, carriers must comply with the international ADR convention and have a permit for their carriage. The transport of beer does not require such conditions, but those relating to temperature and light.

Beer should be kept at a low temperature, even during transport. The optimum temperature for storing beer is between 2 and 16 degrees. Other temperatures harm it. Beer should not have access to light. It likes darkness, which is why it is sold in dark bottles to preserve its flavour.

The design of the vehicle must provide suitable conditions for the beer, i.e. the car must be equipped with alcohol tanks, transport protection and a cooling device. On the other hand, if the beer is bottled, it must be transported in such a way that there is no risk of breakage. It so happens that the truck is also required to be blacked out and hermetically sealed. Beer is also transported in containers.

Alcohol, including beer, is a food product, so the haulier must meet the requirements appropriate to the transport of food. He is obliged to submit documents to the sanitary inspectorate. The vehicles used for its transport are checked and registered by the sanitary inspectorate. HACCP (food hazard prevention system) rules must be followed during transport. In addition, the driver and loading and unloading employees must have up-to-date health books. Documents relating to the load and the sanitary condition of the vehicle must be carried in the cabin of the vehicle transporting the beer.
