[PL] How will the packaging industry change in 2024?

4min read 17/01/2024

Changes in the packaging industry could already be seen in 2023. These were largely leaning towards the introduction of eco-friendly solutions. There are many indications that this trend will continue in 2024. More and more companies intend to say goodbye to plastic to a greater or lesser extent. Are we in for a packaging revolution? We look at what changes this year could bring!

Growing environmental awareness

Ecology has become one of the key factors shaping many areas today. Construction, industry, logistics – more and more industries are now investing in solutions to protect the environment. The packaging industry is also consistently following this trend. Evidence of this is, among other things, the growing commitment to research into innovative materials to replace plastic.

Biodegradable materials

Biodegradable packaging in particular is at the centre of the green packaging revolution. Materials such as bioplastics, cellulose and other compostable substances are becoming alternatives to traditional, hard-to-degrade plastic. It can therefore already be predicted that research into biodegradable polymers, packaging made from recycled materials and alternative materials such as plant fibres or mushroom packaging will determine new trends in packaging ecology.

Sustainability

However, that is not all. There is also much talk that sustainable packaging design will become a priority in 2024. Companies will aim to minimise the amount of materials used, designing reusable packaging and promoting the idea of recyclable packaging.

Environmental education

With the development of sustainable packaging, consumer education will also be an important element. It can be anticipated that large companies in particular will invest in information campaigns to promote informed purchasing and proper disposal of green packaging. Promoting public awareness of green packaging aims to accelerate consumer adaptation to new standards.

Environmental standards and certification

In 2024, environmental standards and certifications related to packaging will become more important. Companies that commit to meeting certain environmental standards will enjoy greater customer recognition. Certified biodegradable packaging and sustainable production strategies will become a key element of business strategies.

Smart packaging – a revolution in the packaging industry?

Smart packaging, which combines traditional functions with innovative technologies, will become increasingly popular in 2024. This technological revolution will bring further development of packaging equipped with advanced sensors capable of monitoring product storage conditions. Sound like science fiction? And yet, this kind of solution awaits us very soon!

This evolution is aimed not only at making logistics more efficient, but also at improving the quality of products delivered to consumers. How does it actually work?

Smart packaging uses sensors to precisely monitor the storage conditions of products. They can collect information on temperature, humidity or even shock exposure. This enables manufacturers to maintain optimal conditions, resulting in longer shelf life and preserving freshness of products.

Smart packaging also opens up the possibility to personalise the consumer experience. Advanced sensors allow the information presented on the packaging to be customised, providing customers with additional content, product information or even interactive elements.

Innovative technologies in the packaging industry

Alongside technological advances, the packaging industry in the area of logistics is introducing a number of innovative solutions that aim not only to increase the efficiency of packaging processes, but also to optimise transport conditions and the delivery of products to customers.

In addition to the use of intelligent packaging, the

the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) into packaging logistics. AI algorithms can analyse data on the quantity and type of products, enabling more efficient warehouse management and optimisation of packaging processes. This will enable logistics companies to handle orders faster and more accurately, minimising errors and costs.

In the context of new technologies, sustainable materials and packaging methods are also growing in importance. Companies will look for innovative solutions to reduce packaging waste. The implementation of technologies such as plastic-free packaging or the use of recycled-based materials is becoming a priority for companies striving for sustainability.

The changes described above have been coming into effect for some time now. Although many of the solutions are only at the research stage, one thing is certain – the environmental revolution is gaining momentum!
