[PL] How to make a bow from ribbon?

4min read 10/01/2025

An elegant bow is the perfect way to enhance any gift. Moreover, it is a decoration that can also be used to decorate your home. Do you want to know how to make a ribbon bow to decorate your gift? In this guide, you will find practical tips for choosing the right ribbon and step-by-step instructions for tying it.

What ribbons to use to tie a bow?

Wondering what to decorate your gift with to make it look elegant? A bow, of course! Especially if you make it yourself. How do you do it? Start by choosing the right ribbon – a large part of the effect depends on its quality and type.

Stiff ribbons are the right choice for cardboard packaging. Grosgrain ribbons, on the other hand, will add a delicate touch to the whole gift thanks to their texture. Satin and velvet, on the other hand, are good choices for elegant gifts. Organic boho-style ribbons (e.g. jute) and fancy lace ribbons will also work well for minimalist gifts.

When choosing the right ribbon, the width of their material is also important and should be matched to the size of the gift. A narrow decorative ribbon will work for smaller gifts, while a wider ribbon will work for larger packages.

How to tie a ribbon bow step by step?

The classic single bow is a versatile decoration that will add elegance to gifts, but will also serve as an interesting home decoration. How do you tie a ribbon bow? Here are step-by-step instructions:

  1. Cut off a piece of your chosen ribbon of your choice – its length should be 40-50 cm, depending on the desired size of the bow.
  2. Form loops – form a loop on one side of the ribbon, then make an analogous loop on the other end of the ribbon. The size of the loops should be proportional to the width of the ribbon.
  3. Cross the loops and form a shape – cross and then put one loop through the other from underneath (as when tying shoelaces). Slowly pull the two ends together.
  4. Correct the shape of the bow – adjust the loops so they are symmetrical. Make sure the knot in the middle is strong and neat.
  5. Trim the ends of the ribbon – in a herringbone or diagonal pattern. You can also lightly burn them with a lighter to prevent the fabric from snapping.

Wondering how to aesthetically place a bow on a gift? If you are wrapping a gift in a box, wrap the ribbon of your choice around it and cross it in the middle, tying a simple knot. Then make a bow according to the tutorial above. Remember, the bow doesn’t have to be in the middle of the gift – you can place it anywhere.

How do I make a double bow from ribbon?

You can also use ribbon to make a double bow to elegantly decorate a larger gift. Here’s how to do it in a few easy steps:

  1. Cut off the desired length of ribbon – 40-50 cm or more, depending on how big a bow you want to make.
  2. Separate the fingers of your hand into two pairs – middle finger and index finger, and heart finger with the smallest finger, forming a V shape with the fingers together.
  3. Wrap the ribbon around your fingers – one end should hang freely. Wrap the ribbon alternately through the inside of one pair of fingers and the outside of the other pair. Use your thumb to hold the drooping end of the ribbon.
  4. Tie a bow – place the other end through the space created between the fork of the two pairs of fingers and the ribbon. Thread the ribbon through the loop and tie again. Done!
