Which packing material and protection should I use?
There is a lot to consider when packing your goods to minimise damage during storage and transport. How you choose the right packing fill to protect your goods depends on what you are packing, what you are packing it in and where and how it will be transported. The weight and size of the goods, whether the goods will be sent in a box, bag or envelope, and whether the goods will be sent all at once or stored are important considerations
Here we take a look at the range of parcel fillers and protectors, and tell you a bit about what we recommend for which types of products.
The type of packing material and protection to use when packing for storage, transport or shipping depends on what you are packing and the journey the goods are going on.
There are a range of protection options, each suitable for protecting different types of products. Examples include cardboard protection, bubble wrap and foam protection, and paper protection. There are also inflatable air bags, this is suitable for extra protection of products.
The most important thing about packing and protection is that it keeps the products in place and minimises the risk of damage during storage, stacking and transport. Products must be protected not only against dust, but also against dirt, moisture and vibration.
What is protective packaging?
It is important not to confuse protection with packaging. Protective packaging is usually packaging material that is placed inside the box or wrapped around the goods in the box to provide cushioning, shock absorption or protection against dust and dirt.
Different types of protective materials
There is a wide range of protective materials available. Each material has its advantages.

Foam
Foam film and foam sheets are an all-round protective material and provide good protection against dust, vibration, moisture and dirt. Foam protection is available in a number of different variants.

Foam film on rolls can be wrapped around objects for basic protection against abrasion and dust, while foam sheets can be wrapped around the product inside the box to give strong protection of the product.
Foam wrap also comes in shapes that protect delicate edges and corners. U-profile protectors wrap around corners, while L-profile protectors prevent edge damage and fit snugly around sharp edges of products.

Bobleplast

Bubble wrap or bubble foil is a great way to protect a wide range of products. It is lightweight, flexible and can be easily cut to size, making it one of the most flexible forms of protection. Bubble wrap is moisture and dirt resistant and provides robust protection against impact and shock. Bubble wrap comes in a variety of flavours, with small or large bubbles, and comes in rolls or bags
More and more people are now choosing bubble wrap made from recycled plastic, which is a good environmental choice. This has a greyish colour that varies from roll to roll depending on the recycled material used in production.

See RAJA’s selection of bubble wrap here.
Another advantage of bubble wrap is that it can be reused again and again, and can thus be an economical alternative. Bubble wrap can also be recycled after last use.

Paper protection:

Paper protection in sheets or rolls
Paper has many different uses as packaging, from wrapping for shipping and storage, to protection inside boxes or as gift packaging.
Kraft paper in rolls or cut into sheets is a 100% clean, unbleached and recyclable material and is environmentally friendly. As protection, this is well suited for lighter products, and can be wrapped or wrapped around products inside an axle.

Another popular alternative is tissue paper. This comes in a variety of colours, and provides both good protection and a nice presentation of products. It is therefore widely used for gift and shop wrapping. Tissue paper is also recyclable.

Another form of paper protection is newspaper wrapping. This is an environmentally friendly alternative, as it is produced from recycled newsprint. Newsprint wrapping is well suited for packaging, for example when moving house.

Paper strips are a flexible product that provides good protection as well as being decorative. They are available in different colours and are widely used for gift wrapping.

Paper strips are pull-apart strips of 3-ply paper, and RAJA paper strips are produced from 80% recycled material. In addition to providing good protection, they can also create a good unboxing experience and are therefore well suited for net shops that send hidden items.
Papp

Corrugated board – in rolls or sheets – has the same benefits as paper, but has extra strength and protects even better. This is solid board that is resistant and can withstand pressure during shipping, as well as absorbing dust. Not only is corrugated board lightweight and flexible, it is also thin enough to be used to separate products without taking up significant space. Corrugated board moulds to the contents – single corrugated board boxes are most malleable and are well suited to even small products.
