The ideal eco-friendly package

What does an eco-friendly package look like? What types of packaging do I need to get the ideal eco-friendly package? These are questions that many online shoppers ask themselves, so here we give our recommendations on what such a package could look like.

The picture above shows an example of an ideal package where everything is environmentally friendly – from the cardboard box, to the tape, the protection and the addressing.

1. Pack in ash:

Let’s start by looking at the cardboard box. Use an ash that is top quality, but also produced using sustainable forestry and a high proportion of recycled paper.

Theashtray from RAJA consists of 70% recycled paper. We have ensured high quality of the kraftliner (outer tube), which is made of wood from sustainable forestry. The testliner (inside of the corrugated board) is made of recycled paper. All in all, this is a sustainable ashtray that can be recycled and is made of environmentally friendly materials.

But don’t stop at the ash – also think about the use of the ash and the footprint it leaves underneath:

• Reduce: make sure you adapt the ash to the contents and minimise empty space, this not only reduces the amount of packaging and filling material, but the reduced volume of the package leads to it taking up less space during transport, so there are fewer trips on the road.
• Usage: When choosing a cardboard box, you should consider the possibility of return. Can the box be reused by the customer? You reduce the number of return damages by offering the customer proper packaging, and you save the customer from buying a new box. 2. Protect – with environmentally friendly paper filling:

Now let’s move on to the contents of the package. Use paper package fillers and make sure that the paper is from sustainable forest management, FSC certified and/or produced from 100% recycled material. Packaging paper, also called kraft paper, is a good alternative. This has the advantage that it can be used both as wrapping and as parcel filling.

In the pictures you can see some variants of paper protection. There are a number of alternatives, but the most important thing is that you use packing material made of environmentally friendly paper.

3. Sealing – with packaging tape made of environmentally friendly, unbleached kraft paper

Now that we’ve chosen an ashtray and filled it, we need to seal the ashtray with environmentally friendly packaging tape made from paper that can be recycled with the ashtray.

Paper tape instead of plastic is an excellent alternative to classic PP or PVC packaging tape. It has the same good properties, but is made of sustainable materials: silicone-free kraft paper and a natural rubber adhesive. You don’t have to remove the tape when recycling the ashtray, so you save a lot of time. This is a big advantage compared to other types of tape.

In addition to the paper tape giving you a 1-material solution with paper tape, cardboard spoon and possibly environmentally friendly packaging paper, the brown, natural look also gives a nice overall impression.

Paper tape comes in variants depending on how heavy the luggage you need to pack is. For luggage heavier than 20 kg, we recommend reinforced tape.

4. Addressing

In our range we have an environmentally friendly variant of the parcel label, a variant of paper. This paper bag can be recycled with the cardboard bag. The adhesive is solvent-free and they come in different sizes.
