What types of cardboard are there, and what are the advantages of the different types?

For those who run a web shop or have a warehouse, it can be useful to know the difference between different types of cardboard boxes. In particular, we distinguish between boxes made of single, double or triple corrugated cardboard. The difference between these is about the thickness and strength of the cardboard. More details on this will come here:

Single, double and triple corrugated cardboard

The thickness and strength of a corrugated sheet depends on the type of flute it is made of, and can vary between 2 and 15 mm. It is the flute and its thickness that classifies the sheets, and it is divided into: single, double or triple corrugated.

The structure of the cardboard

It is important to remember that the base wall of most corrugated sheets is the corrugated board (with or without flute). Corrugated board consists of an outer layer, a corrugated layer and an inner layer, a total of three components. If the board has two or more flute (double or triple corrugated), there are at least two layers of inner paper. The outer and inner layers are subject to different requirements: the outer layer is made of kraft paper and must be able to withstand moisture, temperature fluctuations, as well as storage and shipping handling. The outer layer must also provide strength for stacking and have an optimal surface to print logos on and for packaging tape. The inner layer consists of a sheet that is glued to the underside of the corrugated board.

Cartons are the preferred packaging for most businesses, and are far ahead of plastic, three and metal. Here are some of the advantages of cartons:

  • They are environmentally friendly and can be recycled
  • The material is light in weight
  • They are simple to work with
  • Have high resistance
  • The shock-absorbing effect provides good protection
  • Has good air circulation
  • Protects against moisture
  • Can be tailored to almost any need

Which cardboard spoon for your product?

When choosing the right board and corrugated board thickness for your product, it is important that you focus on your product and take all elements into consideration. In other words, get to know your product and protect it so that the customer receives a flawless product. We recommend making a thorough assessment of your product. Here are elements you should consider:

  • Is the product shiny?
  • Is the product heavy?
  • Will the box be used for storage or shipping?
  • Is the box stackable?

When selecting a cardboard box, you should be aware that the differences in the products, their thickness and their use require different considerations. If you are shipping products to other parts of the world, it is advisable to take these elements into account during transport:

  • Will the goods be shipped by road, sea or air?
  • Should they be loaded where they are stacked with other goods?
  • Are they to be stored for several days, weeks or months?
  • Do the boxes have to be palletised?
  • Is there high humidity or pressure?
  • How many transport links do the packages have to pass through?

Take into account all the elements you can analyse. The more, the better, so that you are sure that the packages arrive intact.
