Guide to sustainable packaging – part 2

This week we follow up with some more tips for environmentally friendly packaging. Last week we looked at ashtrays, e-commerce bags, cardboard envelopes and packing tape, which you can read about here.

Eco-friendly bubble wrap

Because of its versatility, bubble wrap is one of the most popular types of package protection. It can be used for both wrapping, void fill and cushioning during storage or transport. But bubble wrap is not only an effective and versatile product for protecting your shipments. It can also be a sound environmental choice – at least if you choose RAJA’s green alternative to the usual bubble wrap. Our recycled bubble wrap comes in rolls of 150 meters and is made of 50% recycled material

Filling material: biodegradable, environmentally friendly packaging

If you often use filling material in your packaging process, we recommend that you try biodegradable filling material. We can recommend Flo-pak® Natural, which is made from biodegradable corn starch. This filling material can be composted after use and is a good, environmentally friendly alternative to classic filling material. The chips are light and immediately adapt to the contents of the box. This way, they don’t just lie at the bottom of the box, providing solid protection. They are five times more antistatic than ordinary polystyrene chips, so the biodegradable packaging can be used for all products from ceramics and porcelain to sensitive electronics or heavy spare parts.

Paper: cheap, biodegradable packaging

It’s not just bubble wrap and packing chips that can protect your products. Paper is also an obvious choice as a filling material, and because the flexible material can be adapted to any box, it’s an extremely popular option. Whether you need to fill a box with empty drums, create a cushioning bag around the product or simply wrap it around the contents for good protection, paper is a good and sustainable packaging option compared to other types of filling material.

RAJA has a large selection of machines that produce paper filling material. Paper filling material is made from 100% recycled materials and is biodegradable. It is recyclable, so you can both save the environment and lower costs. The filling material comes in several paper grades, and must be used with a packaging machine. This will optimize the packaging process.

Labels

Packing sleeves are one of the most used labelling solutions during transport because they make it possible to identify packages and contents without having to open the boxes. Our green alternative gives you a more environmentally friendly packaging by making a small and simple change in the packaging process. RAJA packing sleeves are made of at least 60% recycled materials, but they remain as strong, robust and self-adhesive as the classic packing sleeves. They are available in three sizes, are made of polyethylene in 60 my and have glue on two intermediate strips, which leads to 30% less glue use than usual.

Recycled polyester straps: ingenious eco-friendly packaging

If you want to make a good environmental choice, make PET strapping part of the packaging process. PET strapping is made from recycled materials and is an environmentally friendly and lighter alternative to rigid and sharp steel strapping.

PET strapping has many advantages: it does not rust, it does not leave rips or marks on your shipments and its elastic properties mean that it can be used for non-conforming packaging shapes without losing strength. With this type of strapping, you get a versatile and durable packaging that you are sure to be pleased with – especially if you regularly use strapping for your shipments.

Palleting: Inka pallets

Of course, we also offer environmentally friendly solutions for you who ship goods on pallets. Our Inca pallets are an environmentally friendly packaging that weighs only half of traditional three pallets, they are extremely robust and can withstand a load of up to 900 kg. The pallets are also resistant to moisture, and thanks to the low weight, they are easy to stack when not in use, saving storage space.

Exporting goods? No problem. The pallets meet ISPM15 requirements and therefore require no special treatment. They are also available as mini pallets.

Transport boxes: plywood box – Heavy duty packaging for export

If you export goods or have extra heavy consignments, you can also use our environmentally friendly plywood boxes. These are sturdy boxes that provide good protection for goods during transport, while being light in weight. The boxes are made of 6 mm thick plywood with five crossing layers of three. The boxes are environmentally friendly and recyclable. They are simple to assemble and of course comply with ISPM15 export requirements.

Office equipment: environmentally friendly filing boxes

There are also environmentally friendly alternatives for filing and storage in the office. Filing boxes for letter files and narrow files are perfect when you need to pack away the year’s binders with racks or have other binders that need to be filed. These boxes are very user-friendly with punched out carrying handles on the short sides that ensure easy handling. The boxes fit binders with both narrow and wide spines. They are put together without the use of tape, and are also good for storage and moving. The boxes are environmentally friendly and can be recycled.

Gift packaging

There are also environmentally friendly alternatives when choosing gift wrap. A good example is wool, which is used as filling material in gift bags. Wool is made of 100% natural material and is recyclable. It provides optimal protection for display products without scratching and is shock-absorbent.
