World Environment Day is marked annually to raise awareness of environmental issues.

World Environment Day 2021 has the theme “Reimagine. Recreate. Restore”.

It’s about restoring and rebuilding, planting trees, building green cities, clearing elves and oceans and changing food consumption. Join us for #GenerationRestoration!

Humans depend on a sustainable natural environment to survive on Earth. Vital air, water and food come as a result of the natural environment and are the very basis of life for humans on Earth.

The UN Panel on Nature issued a report in 2019 on our global diversity. Some selected findings from the report:

  • through agriculture, forestry and mining on land, and overfishing in the sea, around 50 percent of the Earth’s natural ecosystems have been destroyed over the last 50 years.
  • 75 percent of all land has either been turned into fields, covered by concrete, drowned in landslides or affected in other ways.
  • over 30 per cent of marine fish stocks are fished above sustainable levels.
  • plastic pollution has increased tenfold since 1980.

World Environment Day has been marked since 1972, and was established to raise awareness of environmental issues. The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is responsible for the UN marking of the day, and does so in cooperation with a new city or country each year. The theme highlighted is also linked to environmental problems and challenges faced by the city or country. At the same time, all countries, cities and communities are encouraged to mark the day where they are.

In 2021, Pakistan will be the host country for the main World Environment Day celebrations.
