Do you already take volume weight into account when calculating transport and logistics costs?
Among the various ways of reducing transport costs, volumetrics is definitely one of the most effective. This invoicing method can be easily checked, provided we know some basic techniques.
See our 3 smart tips to optimise the volumetric weight of your parcels and get significant savings on your transport costs.
Note: If you are still not aware of the volumetric weight and its impact on the transport budget, we recommend that you read our article “What is volumetric weight?”
Tip 1: Choose the right conveyor
Tip 2: Think carefully about the delivery time you want
Tip 3: Apply the ColisConsult method

Tip 1: Choose the right conveyor
You may not know it, but not all carriers use the same method to calculate volume weight.
Everything will depend on their strategy to optimise their costs internally, as well as how they manage to fill their containers (trucks, planes, freight buses).
So start by asking about their prices. This is an important step in making the right choice.
Ask them first about their calculation method and about the fees. This will be organised by invoiced weight and will allow you to compare the different offers they provide.
This is a trick that is closely linked to our next point..
Tip 2: Think carefully about the delivery time you want
Other elements to know the volume weight – This invoicing method is systematically used on express or international delivery
Why pay for a service if your activity doesn’t necessarily require it?
So think about the customer’s needs and choose the optimal shipping method:
- Your customers expect very fast delivery? Choose express delivery and implement volume weighting in your transport costs.
- Are you sending high value goods that need to be receipted? Choose express delivery as well and include volume weight in your calculations.
- Do you send your parcels internationally? You have no choice but to integrate volume weight into your transport offer.
- Can customers wait a little for delivery? Choose a non-express delivery, for example with Posten, which allows you to avoid invoicing for volume weight.
Plan well before choosing the carriers and type of deliveries. You will probably already be able to save some of the transport budget.

Tip 3: Use the “ColisConsult method”
ColisConsult has recently specialised in optimising the transport sector with its RAJA method; concrete and pragmatic for optimising the volume weight of any business.
By using this method you will make significant savings on transport at the end of the year.
The different stages of this method consist of:
- Analyze the dimensions of the shipments and see how often we send which reference
- Distribute shipments by weight. Ideally based on tariffs from carriers (500g or 1kg)
- Analyse the table you receive to identify the weight scales most often invoiced by carriers
- Adapt your choice of packaging to the diagnosis.
