Clothing and textile packaging is a real profession. Do you have a webshop or shop offering clothing? Then choose shipping packaging that keeps your package compact, that you can personalise and, above all, that is environmentally friendly. Especially the latter is a crucial factor that can make a difference… Are you scratching your head and not sure where to start? No worries! In this article, you’ll find all RAJA’s tips for successfully packing and shipping your clothes in no time.
1. Five indispensable features of good textile packaging
Garments (and textiles in general) are flexible, lightweight items that are easy to transport via a courier service. But some materials, such as linen, silk or angora, are more fragile than cotton or synthetic fabrics. They require extra protective packaging. So choosing the appropriate packaging materials is crucial for successful shipping. Therefore, below we list five important factors you should pay extra attention to when choosing suitable textile packaging.
► Ensure environmentally friendly protection
From the production facility to delivery, it is important to properly protect textiles from moisture and possible tears. Moisture, rain and dirt can completely ruin a garment. So when choosing packaging, you need to make sure it can withstand these factors. It is therefore smart to choose tear-resistant and water-repellent plastic, or sturdy kraft paper with a high grammage.
Both materials are also easy to sort and recycle separately. Because of course, the sustainable nature of your packaging should not be lacking either. The best way is to make sure that your entire packaging is composed of just one raw material: either 100% plastic or 100% paper. We also call this mono packaging. This is much easier to sort and process into new packaging afterwards.
► 2. Choose practical packaging
Choose packaging that is easy to assemble and close (using an adhesive strip or zip lock). That way, you’ll make it a lot easier for your packers to prepare orders.
► 3. Focus on the customer experience
Create a pleasant and unique experience when unpacking. You do this by choosing “frustration-free packaging“, among other things. Such packaging is first and foremost very compact. The smarter and more compact you pack, the better this will be for the customer experience. After all, less unnecessary packaging waste, isn’t that what we all want?
Compact packaging is easy with a shipping bag, for example: you push it completely flat so there is no unnecessary air in it. Or you choose a narrow letterbox box that easily fits into the slot of a letterbox.
► 4. Easy to open and return
Clothing bought online cannot be tried on. It is therefore not surprising that return rates are much higher for clothes. So your customers can still order a different size. To make returning a product easy for your customer and yourself, it is best to choose a return packaging. Such a box or bag has two sealing strips. One to be used by your packer. And a second to be used by your customer to return the packaging if desired.
In addition, it is handy if your packaging has a tear strip so you can open the package without scissors or cutter. That’s much safer for your fragile fabric items inside.
► 5. Keep your packaging discreet
Garments are often personal and can be very different in cost. To guarantee that your customer’s order remains strictly confidential, it is advisable to choose completely opaque packaging. Among other things, this way you avoid the risk’ of theft.

Personalised packaging is an absolute must when you want to take the customer experience to the next level. Without any extra effort, it allows you to really stand out from your competitors around the corner. How would you personalise your packaging?
-Choose packaging in the colours of your brand or collection.
-Show your slogan or write a personal message on the packaging.
-Have your brand logo printed directly on the packaging.
-Wrap your clothes with tissue paper in your brand colours.
Throughout the seasons (or in function of holidays) you can change your packaging to build better customer loyalty. But above all, you create a real wow effect when someone receives your package.
3. Getting your package sent successfully
Selecting your textile packaging carefully is an essential step, but delivery is just as important for the customer experience. Without a good supplier or courier service, all your packaging efforts would be wasted. What criteria should you keep in mind when choosing a good shipping partner?
- The quality of deliveries: on-time delivery, no product damage, etc;.
- The services offered: full loads (per pallet) or individual packages;
- The mode of transport: by sea, by road, by air or by rail, or home delivery, at a pick-up point, etc;
- The traceability of an order: real-time tracking of parcels, the possibility of a reshipment in case of a delivery problem;
- The tariffs applied: advantageous payment options, amount of tax.
Thanks to good and solid packaging, you can protect your products in the best possible way. This way, you avoid returns that could potentially cost you a lot of money. A saving you can’t say no to!
