According to estimates by Netcomm, the Italian Digital Commerce Consortium, e-commerce accounts for 10% of the retail market worldwide and 6.5% in Italy. It is a constantly evolving sector, which in 2018 grew by 15% in Italy compared to the previous year. At the same time, online users have become more and more demanding: they buy any product online, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, they demand secure payments, faster and faster delivery and assistance at every stage of the process.
This is the background to the survey by the German Institute for Quality and Finance (ITQF), which for the first time in Italy, has produced the report “Top Shop 2019/2020”, awarding our e-commerce the Seal of Quality as “Best Shop” in the category “Supplies for commerce, office, industry” within the sector Office, Technology and Media.
The important result emerged from a maxi-survey of online stores conducted by ITQF, Europe’s leading quality survey company, in several categories:
- leisure, games and hobbies
- fashion and accessories
- beauty and health
- home
- food
- garden and crafts
- motor, sport and outdoor
- office, technology and media
and which identified the best 200 Italian online shops.
The research method
The intensive qualitative and quantitative analysis was designed and carried out to map the Italian e-commerce leaders according to 36 parameters including products, prices and delivery times.
First, a ‘long list’ of 1,500 portals was examined with a double evaluation criterion: expert ratings (maximum 40 points) and user ratings (maximum 60 points). The initial list of 1,500 online shops, created on the basis of results provided by the main search engines and market shares in the various sectors, was skimmed according to certain criteria such as Italianness, exclusion of marketplaces and number of monthly visitors not less than 10,000, thus reaching the ‘short’ list of 545 online stores.
In the second phase, a team of experts then evaluated the online shops according to 16 objective criteria in 6 areas of analysis:
- search functionality
- usability of the catalogue system
- product presentation
- trust and security
- purchase and delivery
- service and communication
In the third phase, over 8,500 users representative of the Italian population by geographical area, gender and age, and who had made at least one online purchase in the last year, were interviewed using the CAWI technique.
The sample was asked to express their opinion on the shops on the “short” list, regarding 20 indicators, divided into 8 areas:
- site design
- functionality of the search field
- usability of the catalogue system
- product presentation
- trust and security
- purchase and delivery
- service and communication
- probability of purchase
The conclusion
Finally, the scores of the two phases of the analysis (expert evaluation and user questionnaire) were combined and a single result was thus attributed to each online shop. For each category investigated, the 200 stores that scored above the category average were awarded the ‘Top Shop’ seal, the best one the ‘Best Shop’ seal.
