In 2020, our customers bought a whopping 32 million cardboard boxes. An unbelievably large number. And every single one of these cartons has a very special mission:
The mission of our boxes: To protect your product during storage, transport or shipping!
32 million cartons – one mission
Our Cardboard boxes have safely accompanied clothes, books, biscuits, bottles, plates, notebooks, paintings, CDs, printed matter, wine bottles, children’s seats, machine parts (…) on their journey. Of course, this makes us proud and motivates us to keep expanding our range of cartons and cardboard packaging: You, too, should find exactly the carton that meets your needs. With carton variants in countless thicknesses and sizes, in all formats and qualities, this should actually not be a problem.
But: After the mission is accomplished, every cardboard box and every cardboard, no matter what size and thickness, is one thing in the end: waste.
High recycling rates for paper, cardboard and cartons
Now this is still relatively easy to “bear” in the case of cardboard: Currently, 70% of all materials such as cardboard, paper, cardboard boxes and cartons are shredded and recycled. By 2022, according to Packaging law (Germany), as much as 90% of it is to be recycled (source: Der grüne Punkt/DSD). This means that the shipping carton is considered to be Environmentally friendly packaging solution. But how much effort does paper recycling involve? Do companies have to put large containers for waste paper in their yards? Or does the paper automatically become recycled paper via the blue bin? What happens to bulky cardboard boxes? Do they have to be shredded each time?
Or is there a machine for recycling?
Recycle your own cardboard with the cardboard shredder
The cardboard is therefore shredded and disposed of with the paper waste and fed into the Paper recycling-recycled. Currently, 70% of the raw material is given a “new life” and a new mission. But it can also be done more directly:
The HSM GmbH + Co KG distributes Cardboard shredderwhich transforms used cardboard and other cartons into cardboard mats in no time at all, which can be used in a variety of ways as packaging padding and filling material. This is a double win for the user: he saves on the purchase of packaging materials and reduces disposal costs.
Making paper cushions from packaging waste – the practical recycling of large cardboard boxes
The handling of the transformation artist is child’s play: the discarded cardboard boxes are simply pushed into the insertion slot, pulled in by the knife rollers and processed into a cardboard mat with an airy mesh structure. In the process, the corrugated board is not only perforated but also padded by the special cutting flutes and cut to the desired width in the same operation. The result is a versatile packaging material that can be used to safely embed sensitive products and protect them from damage during transport – produced at zero cost!
Inner values, robust cutting mechanism
One of the most important quality features of the machines is the cutting unit. HSM equips the ProfiPack with high-quality and low-maintenance cutter shafts from its own production. Since they are made from one piece and are induction-hardened, they achieve a long service life and are even resistant to metal staples or adhesive tapes. You do not necessarily have to remove these beforehand. Special bearing plates also ensure reliable cushioning and prevent the cutter from twisting, bending or warping.
Produce precisely fitting paper cushion
However, you can also feed wider boxes into the shredder for shredding. With the feed open on one side, the shredder simply cuts the cardboard from a width of 415 or 425 millimetres. You can then simply feed the unshredded remainder back into the shredder. Very practical:
The metre gauge on the infeed chute lets you see how wide the produced paper padding will be. So you can make your cushions to fit the product you want to cushion.
Sympathetic cost reducer
With its cardboard shredders, HSM – known for its baling presses and document shredders – has probably once again struck a chord with users. The cardboard shredder helps cardboard boxes, even in large quantities, to have a “second life” as an environmentally friendly cushioning material. Of course, the material can then be recycled as waste paper. A very good price-performance ratio and a favourable option for cardboard recycling!
Which plant manager or environmental officer has not been annoyed by the fact that he has to dig deeper and deeper into his pocket for the disposal of his paper and cardboard waste? The ProfiPack shredder enables you not only to improve your company’s eco-balance, but also to sustainably reduce the costs for purchasing packaging materials. The fact that this – quite incidentally – protects the environment can be seen as a further sympathy bonus.
Are you interested in environmentally friendly filling material and cushioning material? In addition to paper padding, bubble wrap (made from 50% Recaclat, for example) or Flopak based on pea starch can also be the right solution. Contact us! 0800 / 20 77 000
