As a professional in the field of packaging for secure shipping, we are also aware that greenhouse gas emissions are produced with every shipment. That’s why all letters and catalogues at RAJA are sent in a climate-friendly way using GoGreen from Deutsche Post. The internet and modern technologies also help us save resources at work and in everyday life: invoices are sent by email, novels are no longer necessarily printed on paper and we no longer have to drive into town to go shopping. But all these offers also consume electricity.
Google and the light bulb
A sensational example of the energy consumption of self-evident and seemingly economical digital technologies is Google search. In milliseconds, it opens up the vastness of the internet and helps us with many of our questions. In the background, a huge network of computers works to answer them and, of course, consumes electricity. Rumour has it that a single search query consumes as much electricity as a 60-watt light bulb in one hour (i.e. 0.06 KWh). The value calculated by Google itself is 0.0003 KWh, i.e. a light bulb burns for only about 18 seconds. However, Google has a lot of light bulbs burning at the same time: in 2012, the number of annual search queries was 1.2 trillion, or 1,200,000,000,000. (1)
The CO2-neutral website
Our online shop with search functions such as the BOXSELECTOR or the tool for personalising adhesive tapes RAJAPRINT also naturally consumes electricity and thus resources. Just as we reduce our CO2 footprint in shipping with GoGreen, we are now ensuring that this consumption is offset in an environmentally friendly way in the digital world. Depending on our user numbers and the associated consumption, we support the international CO2 neutral website initiative. This in turn invests in certified climate-friendly projects, e.g. renewable energies, energy efficiency and sustainable forestry. In partnership with renowned organisations such as the United Nations Programmeon Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (UN-REDD), projects are developed to protect the environment in the long term.
We are pleased to be able to make a further contribution to a clean future in this way.
