We know it too: a long day at work, endless columns of numbers in the spreadsheet programme that keep getting smaller and smaller, the “shredding work” in the graphics tool – and there they go, the good intentions on the subject of “healthy sitting”. The back becomes rounder and rounder, if only to get the eyes closer to the monitor: Turtle says hello. And in the evening, a headache and too tired for the running club.
Back health: The right attitude for the right sitting posture
Yes, we know. That’s why our customer advisors (among others) work with wireless headsets. It’s possible to stand up in between and take a few steps to the printer even during the phone call. The standing table area in front of the coffee machine is not only a popular meeting place when the meeting rooms are once again full and the cups are once again empty. Because:
Getting up and moving around in between is worth its weight in gold for the back and prevents misalignments and tension.
Our desks are all height-adjustable and can be adapted to your own height. But honestly: once the desks have been adjusted manually, no one changes the setting any time soon. The effort is simply too great. The solution, height-adjustable tables up to standing height at the push of a button, is unfortunately insanely expensive. And even the settings of the chair, which could theoretically be adjusted, are rarely changed by anyone.
For more movement while sitting
In order to bring more movement into our sedentary everyday life, we have already tried out a few things. Yoga during the lunch break was very popular for a long time. Also good: getting up and asking the colleague in the neighbouring office a question in person instead of picking up the phone. The running meeting once a week after work. The active lunch break with exercise leaders via teams or the walk at lunchtime at an ambitious pace through (unfortunately) the industrial estate. All great! But:
For all these measures, a conscious decision is needed. Sometimes the appointment takes longer or you are still waiting for that one important call. Sometimes it’s quicker on the phone. And sometimes the bastard sits in the office with you. Whatever the case, you sit.
Back health: RAJA takes a seat for a trial
So now we’re going to approach the subject of sitting movement from the other side. If everyone is going to sit here, then please do it actively! That’s why our company is currently testing various seating options. In the future, RAJA will not only offer the usual office chairs (swivel, height-adjustable, optionally with flexible backrest), but also a certain number of seats that force the user to sit dynamically. Unconsciously and fully automatically, the back compensates for the micro-movements of the body when sitting on such “back trainers”. Muscles and spine are thus constantly in motion – without a conscious decision. And if the stool is not needed at the moment, it disappears neatly and easily under the table.
The RAJA chair pool or: rent-a-seat
Several of these stools will be available per department in the future. Anyone who wants to can help themselves from this pool of chairs. Some of our testers were immediately taken with the first test sitting, others found sitting on the stools disconcerting. Still others can imagine swapping their office chair with backrest for one of these stools for certain activities and for a certain time during the day. This gave rise to the idea of keeping a certain contingent ready for each department. Rent-a-seat, so to speak.
The concept can be expanded
We are curious to see how our small, wobbly friends are accepted. And if necessary, they will be upgraded. Because there’s one thing we’re proud of at Rajapack: we may not necessarily be the best at sitting actively. But we are quite good at actively listening. We would be happy to hear “I have a back” less often in future. And go for a run tonight. Or tomorrow. But the day after tomorrow at the latest
