Advent decoration do it yourself

5min read 04/12/2018
In the run-up to Christmas, the festive mood is gradually built up: An Advent calendar counts the days until Christmas and every Advent Sunday another candle is lit in the Advent wreath. The anticipation of the holidays is rising and everyone is happy about beautiful decoration ideas with which to lovingly decorate the home. Original little things made of packaging quickly create a festive mood within your own four walls.

Christmas decoration from pallet wood

Pallets are still popular in the DIY scene. The wood is used for indoor and outdoor furniture and can be found in private households as well as in professional event locations and companies. Pallets seem to be made for everyone and also fit into the Christmas season with beautiful ideas.
So why not turn pallets into Advent decorations? How about this idea for your company entrance area or garden: wooden pallets can be quickly transformed into a Christmas eye-catcher with a little skill.

This is how you proceed for the Christmas pallet DIY:

  • Choose at least one pallet with as few knotholes and cracks as possible.
  • Then all you need is a pencil and a jigsaw with a suitable saw blade.
  • Think about suitable motifs for the 10 struts and draw them out: whether Christmas tree, poinsettia, little house, angel or other wintry motifs – as long as it is not too filigree, everything is possible. In the case of Euro pallets, the measurement of the small boards (the 2 middle ones) is given with 9 cm and that of the three larger ones with about 14 cm width.
  • Now it’s time to start sawing. Make sure to cut out curves slowly and accurately. We recommend dust masks to avoid breathing in sawdust.
  • If you like, you can now smooth the rough edges of the saw with some sandpaper. Then you can decorate the wintry landscape with fir branches and fairy lights.

Advent decorations from cardboard and cardboard

Cardboard is probably the most widely used craft material. Whether in kindergarten, primary school or with elaborate cutting patterns: cardboard comes in many formats, and craft ideas at all skill levels. Whether snowflakes, Christmas trees, Christmas tree balls or stars: there are many beautiful shapes that can be cut out of white or coloured paper or painted. Sturdy templates can be made from cardboard scraps to create several of these works of art at once.
Simply look for the right template on the Internet, print it out, stick it on the piece of cardboard, cut it out and get started.

In combination with transparent paper, colourful photo cardboard becomes a Christmas backdrop…

Christmas in the window

If you want to decorate not only inside the house but also the windows to the outside during Advent, you are in good company. Advent windows are common in many localities.
Advent windows are visual Advent calendars: from 1 to 24 December, a window on a house that can be seen from the street is decorated and lit up for Christmas. Often, when the window is lit for the first time, small treats are also offered: Mulled wine, tea and Christmas biscuits.
Regardless of the Advent window, a pretty decoration is a delight. Bärbel’s Wohn & Deko Ideen shows how to create an illuminated Christmas box for the windowsill from simple cardboard:

Fireplace made of cardboard or pallets

As a symbolic figure for Christmas gift-giving, Father Christmas is used in many figures. And as is well known, Father Christmas comes down the chimney. But what if there is no chimney? With a cardboard box and some paint or photo wallpaper, you can create an entrance for the round, friendly man in no time at all. The version made of pallet wood is particularly elegant and rustic. For this, a suitable recess is sawn out of the pallet or the pallet boards are detached and carpentered together to fit. If you like, you can also hang up socks 🙂 To make the DIY fireplace console fireproof despite the cardboard or wood, we recommend using LED candles.

There are plenty of instructions online, for example on Pinterest or YouTube.

Craft ideas from corrugated cardboard

Always particularly “grateful” for handicrafts: corrugated cardboard! Whether it’s a Christmas tree or a poinsettia, corrugated cardboard can be used for two- and three-dimensional crafts. In the simple version, templates can be drawn on the corrugated cardboard, cut out and glued against each other as gift tags, Christmas decorations or even as motifs for self-made cards.
However, you get real works of art when you stick the corrugated cardboard, as with this pretty Christmas tree:

Christmas star from gift bags

Finally, a real classic, extremely simple and with a guaranteed “wow effect” when unfolded: Stars made from gift bags (also works with the classic sandwich bag) not only look very pretty in your own four walls, but are also suitable for giving away as a small Christmas greeting. For the more advanced: make the whole thing glow with a string of LED lights!
