Why is pallet selling becoming more and more popular? | RAJA

4min read 07/04/2021

Too little space, lack of internal processes, difficulties in organising your warehouse around it… There are many excuses for not starting to be delivered by full pallet.

However, when your storage space allows it, selling by the pallet has only advantages.

But can you name them all, to motivate your internal logistics teams to adopt pallet delivery and storage? We list them in this article.

How does pallet selling work?

Your packages are delivered on a pallet, and if your supplier has done his job right, this pallet is stable, solid and homogeneous.

Once the pallet is on your delivery area, all you have to do is get your pallet truck and go and store it in the right place.

Note that, if you adopt the sale by the pallet, you can then equip yourself with a forklift truck, which will allow your operators to move and store your products at height, in complete safety.

Advantages from the most obvious to the least cited (wrongly)

There are a number of advantages to selling by the pallet, which are worth looking at to overcome any preconceived ideas you may have about this delivery method. Here they are.

Selling by the pallet – budgetary savings!

It’s obvious: delivery by pallet means that your packaging will cost less, because transporters offer much lower transport costs for pallets than for individual packages.

The reason for this is simple: because pallets often have standard dimensions, they allow carriers to optimise the loading plans of their containers, making better use of the available space. No wonder they favour them in terms of rates!

Delivery by pallet – time saving!

If you don’t use a pallet, the packaging you receive has to be unpacked, put on trolleys or rolls and then stored in the right place. This means a lot of extra handling, which you can save by delivering by pallet.

In fact, when you receive your pallet, you save time on the preliminary unpacking stage: you simply store it directly, without making your operators go through this time-consuming phase, which clogs up your reception areas.

In short, delivery by pallet saves you time and space. Practical!

Delivery by pallet? Saves space!

If this argument seems contradictory, we agree with you: a pallet seems to take up more space than a single package.

However, beyond the space saved on your docks or delivery reception areas, palletising allows for immediate storage optimisation in your warehouse.

This is because you have an entire space dedicated to your packaging, where you can store your pallets on top of each other in a homogeneous manner without losing any additional space.

Our tip: although there are several interesting storage methods, after a pallet delivery, you should take inspiration from the ABC method, which allows you to store your packaging in locations close to your packing stations, thus reducing the flow in your warehouse.

Selling by the pallet ? better for the environment!

We tend to forget it, but delivery by pallet is much more environmentally friendly than delivery by unit packaging

In fact, the pallet is generally recyclable and can be reused for transporting your own goods or for storage. Made of wood, cardboard or even moulded (and therefore 80% recycled), the pallet is a sustainable, environmentally friendly choice for a CSR policy that is truly applied to your logistics.

Delivery by pallet ? better quality!

When well prepared, a pallet protects your products much better than single packages… both during transport and in your warehouse.

Carefully wrapped in protective film and fitted with sturdy corner protectors and straps to stabilise the packaging, your pallet provides perfect protection for its contents and prevents scratches and impact damage.

In addition, your goods stored on a pallet accumulate much less dust over time.

So, pallet or no pallet?

Teams are not always aware of all the benefits, which are budgetary, organisational and quality-related. Try it out and you will see if your internal contacts can immediately identify all the advantages.

For your test to be conclusive, try dedicating a pallet space in your warehouse: we’ll be willing to bet that you will definitely adopt it.
