[FR] What furniture packaging will ensure smooth transport?

5min read 17/04/2024

If there’s one type of object that’s complicated to transport, it’s furniture!

It’s not uniform in size, it can be heavy and bulky, and it needs real protection to prevent it being damaged when it’s moved.

Good news: you’ve come to the right place to find furniture packaging tailored to your needs.

Are you a furniture retailer looking for the right packaging material to deliver your goods? Or are you planning to move your business? Or are you planning an event and need to transport furniture? You’ll find everything you need here.

What containers should you use to pack your furniture?

First of all, you need to find the right way to pack your furniture. You have two options: cardboard furniture packaging or wooden crates.

Cardboard boxes: the basics for transporting furniture

Cardboard boxes are much more solid than they look!

The key to your furniture shipments is to choose your cardboard packaging flute carefully, depending on the weight of your product and its need for protection.

The fluting on your cardboard boxes acts as a barrier to protect the inside of your parcel from external shocks. So the more layers of fluting you have, the stronger your furniture packaging will be.

New Call-to-action

So choose between :

  • Single-flute: suitable for lightweight products.
  • Double flute: for furniture weighing up to 40 kg, this is slightly more resistant to external variations (in temperature and humidity).
  • Reinforced double flute: for furniture weighing up to 70 kg, this is 50% more resistant than single flute, and is also resistant to humidity, temperature variations, bursting and vertical compression.
  • Triple flute: for heavy loads up to 500 kg, this is the type generally used for removals. It is ideal for very heavy furniture, but also for very fragile products.

To find the right cardboard box to pack your furniture, visit the RAJA cardboard box search engine, where over 1,200 formats are always in stock.

If required, you can also choose a modular cardboard box setspecifically designed for sending products such as furniture. It contains a box with a reinforced base, a belt to secure the parcel and a cover to protect the top.

The wooden crate: ideal packaging for very fragile furniture

Do you need to transport and protect very fragile furniture? Or do you need to export it internationally? Then a wooden crate will be your best ally.

When you’re exporting goods outside the EEC, this furniture packaging is a must. Wood is the most protective material for transport, and also complies with the ISPM15 phytosanitary standard, which combats the proliferation of harmful organisms that develop in wood.

Be sure to choose plywood crates, which are both strong and lightweight. You should also take care to select the height of the box’s rafters according to the handling capacity of your pallet trucks or those of your removal men or transporters.

How do you choose cushioning for your furniture packaging?

Cushioning is a packaging material for furniture that locks your product in the parcel, but also separates different elements so that they don’t clash or rub against each other.

A cushioning material can be used both to fill the void in your furniture packaging and stabilise the different parts, and to prevent scratches on the products.

There are various materials to choose from, depending on your needs:

Recycled bubble wrap allows you to wrap, protect and cushion your products. Flexible and lightweight, it wraps easily around your furniture and is highly resistant, while being eco-responsible.
Bubble wrap is highly resistant to shocks and tearing, and can be recycled once it has been sorted and collected by the company.
Foam sheets can be used to cushion, pad or separate your products in your furniture packaging. They are easy to cut to size.
Foam film is a scratch-resistant cushioning material, ideal for protecting the most fragile surfaces. It is flexible enough to adapt to the shape of your products.
Kraft paperis tear-resistant and anti-static, and can be used to wrap parts of your furniture that are not very fragile, or to wedge different parts of furniture kits into your crates. This packaging paper is bio-sourced and recyclable, so you can be environmentally responsible.
Corrugated cardboard can be used as furniture packaging or as spacers in your parcels. It is 100% recycled and recyclable.
Les fibres de calage en textile recyclé : matériau durable, ces fibres sont légères et apportent un aspect esthétique à la présentation du contenu de votre paquet. Recycled textile padding fibre can be used to fill voids. It has a shape memory, which absorbs shocks during transport. It is also scratch-resistant, and resists settling and temperature variations. It is perfect for shipping furniture that is complex in shape, fragile and/or heavy.
Recycled crepe bobbin is ideal for protecting oblong shapes, furniture legs or mechanical feet. It is made from 100% recycled materials and is recyclable.

Extra elements to protect your furniture during transport

During transport and handling, some parts of your furniture are more fragile than others. These include corners, sharp edges and surfaces that can easily be scratched.

Here are the packing supplies and products you need to ensure safe transport.

Angles, profiles and corners

You’ll need angle irons, profiles and corners if you want to protect the corners and protruding edges of your furniture.

Depending on the sensitivity of your products to scratches or your protection needs, you can choose :

Additional protection

To protect unpackaged furniture during transport, or to protect the packaging of the furniture itself from the elements, consider :

Plastic coversThese can be recycled after sorting and collection by your company.
Stretch filmStretch film can be applied to your crates for extra protection. It is 80% recycled and recyclable.
