There is usually an environmentally friendly alternative to your standard packaging and if you consciously choose packaging with the environment in mind you will be ahead of your competitors from the start. The packaging industry is becoming more and more sustainable and we at RAJA help entrepreneurs every day to find environmentally friendly alternatives to the packaging products they use most.

Read on, where we’ve collected alternatives to standard packaging such as bubble wrap, shipping bags (also called e-commerce bags/webshop bags) and parcel tape.

Choosing eco-friendly should be easy!

Eco-friendly alternatives to bubble wrap:

Many web shops use bubble wrap, a good old classic, in their shipping – understandably, as it’s also a great protective material that’s both flexible and versatile – but it’s made of plastic, a material that degrades slowly or not at all. So it’s good that there are alternatives that minimise the climate impact:

Eco-friendly bubble wrap has the same great properties as regular bubble wrap, but it’s made from 80% recycled material. This does not mean that we avoid the plastic, but that we reduce the overall climate impact because recycled resources are used to produce the bubble wrap. Our eco-friendly bubble wrap is easily identified by its green colour.
Kraft paper is a great alternative for plastic protection. It is made of 100% pure and unbleached kraft paper, as well as FSC certified. You can use it both for wrapping but also as parcel filling.
Flo-Pak® Natural, also known as packing chips, comes in an environmentally friendly version made from degradable corn starch that is easily and simply broken down by water and leaves no toxic waste. Package chips have been slightly maligned as a package filling material that can be difficult to handle – but since the eco-friendly variant is easy to break down, it also makes it easy to dispose of if you call attention to it in your shipment.
Eco-friendly air pillows, are another innovative addition to the eco-friendly alternatives. Air pillows are made using an air pillow machine and it is a filling many webshops are now using. Air pillows can be made to order, streamlining and optimising packaging processes. We have 2 environmentally friendly alternatives in air pillows: paper air pillows and biodegradable air pillows. Both are good alternatives, the paper film is made of 20 g/m2 paper with a 12 my coating of potato starch that guarantees a good durability when the cushion is filled with air.

Environmentally friendly alternatives to shipping bags (web shopping bags):

Shipping bags / web shopping bags / e-commerce bags, the dear child has many names – but this bag is certainly the e-commerce merchant’s best friend. It takes up less warehouse space than cardboard boxes do and reduces your shipping costs because the material is lighter and takes up less space. In short, it’s a perfect solution for you who ship products such as clothing that don’t need as much package filling and protection. Unfortunately, shipping bags, like bubble wrap, are usually made of plastic and this pollutes the environment in a way that cardboard, for example, does not. Our eco-friendly shipping bags are made from 100% recycled plastic, which minimizes the environmental impact. The bags are equipped with an adhesive seal, they are water-repellent and have a black inside that protects against transparency.
We also offer paper shipping bags which are perfect for soft products such as garments, wool, textiles and toys. This range of shipping bags is made without plastic and is made from 30% recycled kraft paper.

Environmentally friendly alternative to packing tape:

When it comes to sealing parcels, most people use plastic parcel tape, which is just plain parcel tape as we know it, it’s a natural choice for many. But here you can easily make an environmentally friendly choice without compromising on quality. Paper parcel tape gives your parcels a natural look, and it can be recycled with the packaging – you don’t have to separate the tape before throwing the box away for recycling. In fact, in many cases, paper tape is more cost-effective than plastic tape. Paper tape is strong and sticks immediately and better than plastic tape for recycled boxes, for example.

RAJA’s own paper tape is made from 57g silicone-free kraft paper with a natural rubber glue that makes it recyclable along with the cardboard. In standard quality it is used to seal boxes weighing up to 20 kg. The paper pen can be used easily and simply with a standard hand dispenser.
There is also another environmentally friendly alternative, adhesive tape, on adhesive tape the glue activates when moistened and then bonds immediately to the surface of the box. When the wet adhesive tape is removed, the surface is damaged and an unauthorised opening is immediately revealed, this means theft is completely impossible as it will leave a damaged package. Please note that for adhesive tapes, a moistening machine is required to process the tape.
