If you’re an artist and need to send a painting by post or courier – we know that paintings are fragile and can easily be damaged in transit. So how do you pack a painting correctly to ensure it arrives in perfect condition? We’ll answer that in this post – sharing our top tips for packaging paintings and printed matter for safe shipping.
Choosing the right packaging
The first step in packing a painting is choosing the right packaging. It’s important to use reinforced boxes that can protect the painting from perforation during shipping.
We recommend choosing boxes with at least 2 layers of corrugated cardboard for maximum protection. The size of the box should be slightly larger than the frame of the painting, but not too much.
In this cavity, we recommend using edge protection, bubble wrap or kraft paper – which can absorb shocks. This helps prevent damage to the surface/corner of the product. Corner protection is especially important if frames are being shipped. For surface protection, we recommend a gentle form of protection such as foam film, tissue paper, bubble wrap or kraft paper.
At RAJA, we have telescopic boxes with adjustable height to fit most paintings.
… and we also have all kinds of protection.
If you are sending smaller paintings and small printed matter, such as books etc. we recommend what we call“Covers“:

These types of covers are designed to provide excellent edge protection. There are also variants that have variable heights and make it possible to send more at the same time.
Send multiple paintings at the same time
Should you need to send multiple paintings in the same shipment, it’s important to pack them individually to avoid damage. Use separate boxes or protective covers for each painting and make sure they are sufficiently separated to prevent them from bumping into each other during transport – they shouldn’t be able to rustle around inside the box.
Extra things to consider
In addition to the right packaging and protective material, there are some extra things to consider when packaging paintings and fragile printed materials. Apply transport and warning labels to the packaging to help clarify the shipment’s shipping details. A label such as “FRAGILE” informs the carrier of the fragility and potential value of the shipment.

If you are sending posters or printed matter that can be rolled, we recommend the classic cardboard tubes. Here we recommend that you roll up your “printed matter” with e.g. tissue paper, then place it all in the cardboard tube and close the lid carefully, preferably with a staple or a good piece of tape.

NOTE! Remember that shipping companies may charge extra for round tubes.
