[DA] 7 classic webshop packaging mistakes – and how to avoid them

3min read 25/03/2025

At RAJA, we know how important it is that your parcels arrive safely to the customer. Packaging should not only protect – it should also provide a good experience. When the package looks good and the contents are intact, it gives the customer a safe and professional experience. A beautiful and thoughtful package sends a strong signal of quality and care. It’s not just about the packaging itself, it’s about the entire customer experience from purchase to receipt. Here are seven common packaging mistakes and what you can do instead.

Don’t use worn boxes

Avoid too much tape

Choose the right packing filler

It’s all well and good to be sustainable and reuse packaging, but boxes with cracks, marks and pressed corners give a bad first impression – and they don’t protect properly either. Instead, you can use old boxes as packaging filler using a cardboard shredder. It’s smart, environmentally friendly and practical.

It may seem sensible to use extra tape to secure the package, but it’s often unnecessary and a waste of time and materials. It can also make it difficult for the customer to open the parcel. Instead, use paper tape – it’s more sustainable and makes it easy to reuse the box afterwards.

If there is too little packing material, the goods can be damaged during transport. But too much filling is wasteful and creates unnecessary waste. Find a good balance where the contents are stable without being compressed. Paper filling is a good solution that both protects and looks good when unpacked.

The box must fit

Remember the delivery note

Use bags with care

Sending a small item in a box that’s too big means you’re paying to ship air. It also requires more packing material and takes up more space in transit. Use boxes that fit in size – or adjustable boxes that you can customise. Our Box Selector makes it easy to find the right solution.

The packing slip is important for the customer’s overview. If it’s missing or damaged, it creates uncertainty and extra work. Use a delivery note pocket on the outside of the parcel – it protects the document from dirt and moisture and makes it easy for the customer to check their delivery.

Shipping bags are great for clothes and other soft products, but not suitable for fragile goods. Here you need to think about extra protection. You can also choose bags with double closures and handles so the customer can easily use the bag for returns. It makes everything easier – and more professional.

Wrong choice of cardboard quality

Cardboard boxes come in different qualities and it’s important to choose the right one. Lighter products can be packed in single corrugated cardboard, while heavier or fragile items require double or triple corrugated cardboard. An incorrect assessment can lead to damage, spoilt goods and extra costs. At RAJA, we are happy to advise you to choose a solution that suits your needs and protects your goods in the best possible way throughout transport. With the right cardboard quality, you get a stronger, more stable and more professional packaging.
