Many webshops have experienced theft when sending packages, with simple tricks you can make it difficult for the thief and use a smart packaging solution that prevents theft!

In this post we will show you how you can reduce, or completely stop the thief from putting their long fingers into your parcels and goods.

> When should you anti-theft your packages?

Considerations:

Before you set out to theft-proof your packages and shipments, it’s a good idea to assess whether there’s a need.

To make an assessment, it is important that you consider how vulnerable your type of product is to burglary, but above all the cost of theft and tampering.

  • Are you the shipper of a valuable and sought-after product?
  • Does your experience show that thefts are frequent and you lose out?
  • …or does your insurance require you to be theft-proof?

The above questions are good to investigate before you start anti-theft – you need to find out if there is a real need and what your costs are. If there is a need, then it is worth examining the cost you will incur from a theft vs. the cost you will incur by theft-proofing your packages.

Some types of products are more at risk than others, in the picture below are the classic ones where the risk is usually high:

> Adhesive tapes:

Adhesive tapes

A simple and inexpensive but smart way to prevent theft is to use packaging that was not originally designed for theft prevention, but because of its function makes a theft visible – the smart packaging we are talking about is adhesive tape. Which can act as a sort of preventative element, making thieves think twice.

In fact, the function of adhesive tape is that if you try to remove it from the box, it will tear the surface of the box, leaving a clearly damaged box.

Adhesive tape is an alternative to plastic packaging tape, and an environmentally friendly one at that. The adhesive on the tape activates when it is moistened and then immediately bonds to the surface of the box. When, as mentioned before, the wet adhesive tape is removed, the surface is damaged and an unauthorised opening is immediately revealed.

Note that for adhesive tapes, a moistening machine is required to process the tape.

> Safety tape

Security tape is a tape designed to prevent theft and is again a preventative method. The tape has two layers and if you try to remove it, it leaves an imprint with the text ‘Opened Void’. In other words, the tape acts as a ‘sealing tape’. This tape is a clear tape that signals to the thief ‘if you open me, it will show!’

This tape is also a smart way to ‘Seal your packages’, but it also makes the package more visible in the cargo. Therefore, the tape is very smart as it is also anonymous.

> Seals

A total security of your goods is a direct sealing of metal or plastic. This type of sealing is mostly intended for containers, wooden and plastic export boxes and barrels, for example.

Plastic seals:

We have two types of plastic seals, one with security stakes and one smooth, a bit like a strips:

The features can be seen from the pictures and this type of seal can be removed with a knife, scissors or a pair of pliers. The seals have individual 6-digit serial numbers that can be used to identify contents without opening.

High security seal:

A seal of this quality is suitable for containers, as well as for special forms of transport that are particularly vulnerable. It is equipped with double numbering and is covered with ABS plastic – it is made of steel with rust protection and the seal can only be opened with bolt cutters.
