Safety first: Well packed means safely delivered

3min read 19/08/2010

Safety is a key issue in transport. It is both the safety of the goods being transported and the safety of the transport itself. The quality of the packaging material has a direct impact on the efficiency of transport, handling and storage in general – and thus on the success of each individual logistics transaction. Market-leading packaging wholesalers such as Rajapack therefore advise their customers on choosing the right packaging solution throughout the entire transport process.

Accidents and damage to the goods being transported are counted among the most important cost items in the transportation of goods. Yet many cases could have been avoided at the outset by choosing the right packaging materials. In addition, these often small investments in packaging materials quickly pay for themselves compared to the expensive consequences of transport damage. The quality of the packaging material therefore plays a decisive role and should be at the forefront. In view of the high safety requirements in the EU and the variety of goods transported, suitable packaging solutions are becoming increasingly important.

Security throughout the transport chain

With more than 4,000 packaging solutions, Rajapack, the European market leader in B2B mail order packaging, offers its customers a wide range of packaging solutions for the transport sector. Packaging plays a key role throughout the entire shipping process. It starts with choosing the right box.

In this area alone, Rajapack offers 500 different products – from simple corrugated cardboard flap boxes to special hazardous goods boxes – always designed for the weight, delicacy, transport route or storage of the goods in question. Special bubble wrap, security envelopes or packaging chips offer additional security for unstable goods. Special packing tapes come into play when closing boxes – often with multiple functions: on the one hand, they prevent the box from being opened during transport and must therefore be very strong; on the other hand, they have a warning or alert function – for example, when transporting particularly delicate goods such as electrical appliances, glassware or porcelain. Rajapack’s product range currently includes more than 150 different packaging tapes – plus special labels for marking dangerous goods such as corrosives and flammables. However, special regulations apply here: drivers need a special licence to transport such cargo at all.

Tailor-made solutions for palletised goods

Safety first also applies to palletisation. In the export trade in particular, choosing the right pallet is a very important part of transport safety. It is not always necessary to use a Euro pallet: there are now full-size alternatives made of plastic or compressed sawdust. The selection criterion in this case – apart from safe and easy handling – is also the protection of personnel from possible nail or splinter injuries.

On the pallet, packing straps or strapping secures the goods. The wrapping with modern stretch film – together with high-quality tensioning belts according to EN 12195-2 – prevents the load from slipping. Alternatively, stable and even waterproof container solutions can also be used. This also has additional advantages, as special security seals for containers make the customs process easier: that way, one kills two birds with one stone.
