Protective work gloves for your hands

3min read 18/06/2012

Hands are our important capital. It is therefore necessary to protect this “working” tool from direct exposure to adverse external influences that could damage it in any way. Work gloves are essential for several reasons. They protect not only our skin, but also the materials we process in the gloves. Today, there is a wide range on the market depending on the area of use, type of material, surface, gripping properties…

Gloves are used not only in chemically aggressive, dusty, fleshy or otherwise contaminated environments, but also in sterile conditions where absolute cleanliness must be maintained at work. In the manufacture of delicate electronics, computer chips, etc., any contamination in the form of technician skin contact would have fatal consequences. Contact of electronic components with static charge can have at least as damaging a consequence. For these cases, the use of gloves with the “ESD” label is advisable (ESD stands for electrostatic discharge and provides perfect protection against electrostatic charge).

In work environments where gloves are actually used as protection against direct contact between materials and the skin of the hands, finger sensitivity can be an important factor. These work gloves will prevent contamination and fingerprints being left on sensitive products. Knitted balloon, nitrile, latex, vinyl or elastane gloves are optimally designed for precision work: they are soft, elastic and ensure a secure grip. They are made of materials such as cotton, nylon, vinyl or PE, which ensure ideal tactile sensitivity.

Disposable gloves are used especially in medical, food industry, optics or laboratories. Thanks to the material used (such as latex, nitrile, vinyl…) they form a “second” skin on each hand. The sensitivity of the fingers is not limited by anything. Due to the direct contact of the skin with different surfaces, skin tolerance is also an important element – what is problem-free for one person may cause an allergic reaction in another. This is also true for powdered work gloves: on the one hand, the thin layer of powder on the inner surface of the glove makes it easier to put on and take off, but on the other hand, it may not be tolerated by every skin. Disposable gloves provide good protection against many liquid substances.

Other areas where protective gloves are indispensable are working environments where hands are exposed to a range of thermal factors or very high temperatures (e.g. welding) or, conversely, extreme cold, as well as where there is a risk of cuts or in operations where hands are exposed to mechanical pressure and irritation, such as rough work on construction sites, in workshops or in warehouses. In such cases, work gloves clearly serve as effective protection for the hands against the material or the working environment.

When buying, always ask about the use and properties that your work gloves should have.

It’s worth it: it’s your hands!
