[CS] Send your registered letter correctly – we have a step-by-step guide for you

3min read 03/05/2024

Need to send an important parcel and want to make sure it arrives? Choose registered letter. What are its advantages?

What is the difference between a letter and a registered letter?

A regular letter is the easiest and cheapest way to send mail. With this type of mail, you only need to give the address for sending (the addressee), you do not need to fill in any other forms.

However, you won’t receive a confirmation of posting, a tracking number (you won’t be able to track the movement of the parcel) and you won’t be able to check if the parcel has successfully reached the addressee. The price for sending an ordinary letter starts at 27 CZK, depending on the parameters of the parcel.

On the other hand, you can choose a registered letter whenever you need to send something with a confirmation of sending. As with an ordinary letter, you have to put the addressee’s address on the parcel, except that you also write a delivery note (or, in the case of multiple parcels, a delivery note). The postal staff will provide you with the necessary forms.

Once you have handed over the registered mail for dispatch, you will receive a confirmation of dispatch, a delivery number and you can then keep track of where the parcel is and whether it has been delivered. For this service you will pay from 72 CZK depending on the size of the parcel.

Advantages of registered letter

  • The post office guarantees delivery of the letter, but in the event of its loss, it will pay compensation for damages up to 20 times the cost of the service,
  • a registered letter serves as evidence in legal disputes,
  • you can choose the additional service of a delivery note, which also provides you with confirmation that the addressee has received the parcel,
  • you can use other additional services such as cash on delivery, hand delivery, delivery only in the addressee’s own hands.

Which envelope should I choose for a registered letter?

For ordinary letters, we recommend using C5 envelopewhich can easily accommodate A4 folded paper. For heavier items, other types of envelopes are available, such as C4 or B4. Coloured envelopes are not prohibited, but we recommend choosing subtle colours so that the envelope is not distracting.

How do I write a registered letter?

  1. Write the sender’s address in the top left corner of the envelope and the addressee’s address in the bottom right corner. Make sure that the address is written accurately and legibly.

Dear Madam

Lucie Nováková

Vodičkova 86

123 45 Prague

Tip: For better readability, you can print the address on a label and stick it on the envelope.

  1. Write out a submission slip on which the following information should be written:
  • type of mail (registered letter),
  • address of sender and addressee,
  • the weight of the parcel,
  • method of delivery (hand delivery, address, deposit at the post office),
  • additional services (delivery, cash on delivery, …).
  1. Just hand the parcel over to a postal worker and pay the delivery fee depending on the type of parcel, destination and services chosen.

How long does it take to deliver a registered letter?

  • Priority method – next working day delivery from the day of delivery
  • Economy method – delivery no later than the third working day from the day of submission

What are the options for delivery of a registered letter?

Czech Post offers several options for delivery of registered letters:

  • In your own hands: The addressee or his/her authorised representative can accept the parcel.
  • In the addressee’s own hands only: the parcel can be accepted only by the addressee.

❗ A registered letter can also be sent via the Czech Post’s online service – Letter Online, which allows you to deal with everything electronically.
