Here it is…Black Friday! And this Friday! But what does that mean and where did it come from?
Black Friday is a marketing event taken from the USA. It’s considered to be the start of the pre-Christmas shopping season and it’s safe to say that for many shoppers it’s a real discount holiday.
In recent years, Black Friday has not only been on the last Friday in November, but some e-shops and brick-and-mortar stores have Black Friday for the whole month of November!
Black Friday in numbers
93% of Czechs know what Black Friday is. In the Czech Republic, sales on this day increase by about 350% compared to normal days. And how much are Czechs able to spend? It’s on average around 5 and a half thousand CZK! The average discount in Czech e-shops is around 63%.

Do Czechs shop more from the comfort of their homes or do they head to shopping malls?
In 2017, 23.7% of Czechs shopped in brick-and-mortar stores. A year later, it was only 14.6%. Interestingly, 33.5% shop only on e-shops. However, respondents prefer to combine a visit to a brick-and-mortar store and e-shops.
But be careful when shopping. Some can trick you! Look a few days ahead at the product you plan to buy and see if the price changes significantly or not. You can also use various comparison sites.
But what about a novelty item like Cyber Monday?
Translated in English as Cyber Monday. A bit of a mouthful, isn’t it? Cyber Monday was created by marketing companies to increase sales through e-commerce sites. In the Czech Republic we could see this holiday about 2 years ago. This year, you will surely see Cyber Monday at more e-shops.
