3min read 09/10/2024

Have you ever heard of the “two bucket method”? It’s the ideal way to achieve impeccable floors in your business, shop or office. But what exactly is this technique and why is it so effective? In this article, we give you all our tips and tricks.

1. Cleaning floors using the two-bucket method: what does it involve?

Cleaning floors is not just a question of appearance or aesthetics, as it also has a hygienic function. A very dirty floor can become a breeding ground for bacteria and mould. If you only use one bucket to clean the floors, you’re bound to always rinse the broom or mop in the same water. This method is only partially effective, as the germs picked up are re-mixed with the rinsing water. All this does is spread them to another part of the floor…

The two-bucket method avoids this problem. The principle is very simple: you use one bucket of clean water and a second bucket into which you rinse your broom. This second bucket always contains the dirty water. Clean and dirty water are thus separated. The result: a spotless floor!

2. The two-bucket method, step by step

To clean the floor using the two-bucket method, follow the steps below:

  1. Dip your broom in a bucket of clean water (possibly with floor soap) and wring it out.
  2. Use this broom to clean the floor.
  3. Dip the dirty broom into the second bucket and wring it out again. If the water in the second bucket becomes too dirty, change it in time.

3. What do you need for the two-bucket method?

To clean your floors effectively using the two-bucket method, you’ll obviously need the right equipment. Think brooms, buckets, cleaning trolleys, etc. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right equipment.

3.1 Mops and brooms

To clean floors, you can use different types of broom or mop. A mop is very versatile and can easily be wrapped around a flat broom or squeegee. It is often made from microfibres or cotton and absorbs dirt very well. It’s also easy to clean and reuse.

The second option is the “flat broom“. This type of broom has a flat rectangular shape and is attached to a telescopic handle. Flat brooms are easy to handle and come in different sizes, depending on the surface to be cleaned. Thirdly, you can opt for a “mop“. These make it easy to reach difficult areas, including corners.

3.2 Buckets

The two-bucket method obviously requires two buckets. But which ones? The simplest, no-frills solution is the classic round household bucket, which is perfectly suited to the task. Alternatively, you can opt for a bucket with a press. Slide your broom into the squeezer, then apply gentle pressure. The broom will automatically be wrung out in the press. So there’s no need to bend over and washing requires less effort. It’s both practical and ergonomic.

3.3 Cleaning trolleys

Cleaning trolleys are the most complete solution for anyone wishing to use the two-bucket method. The buckets in such a set are often different colours, making it easy to distinguish between clean and dirty water. The two buckets are placed on a wheeled chassis, allowing the trolley to roll smoothly everywhere. The buckets are usually fitted with a squeezer, so you can work effortlessly. There are even variants with an integrated bin bag holder, so you can quickly dispose of any waste you come across while cleaning.
