Have you decided to send a letter to your grandparents after a long time, or do you just need to send a physical document to the office? With a lot of information now being sent digitally, it’s no wonder people have forgotten the rules of writing an envelope. Come refresh your memory with us on how to fill out an envelope.
Choose your envelope
For ordinary letters up to 20 g and with a maximum size of 23.5 × 12 cm, a standard envelope will suffice letter envelope C5 or C6 envelope. If you are sending a larger document, choose a reinforced mailing envelope with a cardboard wall. A special bubble envelope will protect small and lightweight items.
How do I write the envelope correctly?
Write your address in the top left corner of the envelope. Do not forget your first and last name, street and house number, postcode and city. You can also write “Sender” above the address.
Sender
Peter Mlynár Vranovská 404/24 908 12 Rožnava |
In the bottom right corner of the envelope, write the address of the person to whom you are sending the letter. Do not forget to address the letter as “Mr/Mrs”, and underneath it write the name and surname, street and house number, postcode and town. If you are sending to a company, write the name of the company as well.
In this case, however, you do not need to write the salutation, as you are sending the letter to the whole company. If you are sending a letter abroad, also write the country of the addressee under the postcode and city. Stick the stamp on top of the addressee’s information.

What to avoid when writing an envelope?
Never write an envelope in pencil, pencil , or erasable pen. Use a blue or black pen. Make sure the font is large enough and easy to read.
The font size should be no smaller than 3 mm. For better legibility and to avoid mistakes, we recommend writing in block letters, not cursive. If you have dysgraphia or are not proficient in cursive writing and want the letter to look presentable, you can print the address. Use font 12b.
If you make a mistake when writing out the envelope, do not cross out or rewrite the text, rather get a new envelope. It’s a good idea to keep several envelopes in your home so that you always have them handy. You can choose from our selection.
How do I write the address on the parcel?
The same rules apply for writing an address on a parcel or box as for writing an envelope. Keep in mind that the larger the box, the more visible the information should be. So put a label on the parcel with the sender’s address and the addressee’s address.
You can print the label online on the Slovak Post website or you can get it at a branch. It is also recommended to include the phone number of the addressee so that the courier can contact them. If you are sending fragile items, stick a warning label on the box. Labels for shipping and handling can be found in our offer.
