The food industry is facing an exciting time. After decades in which packaging and preservation methods have evolved rapidly, consumers now have multiple options for transporting food. The next step is to turn these solutions into sustainable, environmentally friendly proposals. Here, cartonboard food packaging holds the key: it is practical, economical and reliable, and fits perfectly into the 5-R strategy to reduce the impact of packaging on the environment.
Cardboard food packaging is part of the EcoResponsible food packaging range that you will find for sale in the RAJA® online shop. Today we show you its five main advantages and give you some references to renew the stock of your business for new materials with a green conscience.
Advantages of cartonboard packaging and food packaging
1. They comply with all environmental protection regulations.
With the EU-wide ban on single-use plastics, which will become a reality in Spain in 2023, there is an urgent need to find substitutes for the crockery, cutlery, straws, polystyrene trays, etc. that are widely used in the catering industry. Food packaging and cartons, made from recycled and recyclable materials in a high percentage, are adapted to the provisions of Directive (EU) 2109/904 and other regulations in the pipeline, such as the Draft Law on Waste and Contaminated Soil of the Ministry of Ecological Transition, which aims to promote the circular economy.
2. Ensuring food safety

In the manufacture of cartonboard packaging intended for direct contact with food, all legal requirements to ensure food safety are taken into account. Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 requires that Food Contact Materials (FCM), including cartonboard and paper, do not release their components at levels that are harmful to human health; and do not modify the composition, taste or odour in an unacceptable way.
The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (Aesan) of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs reminds that these FCMs must be identified with the pictogram that certifies them as such, with the symbols of a cup and a fork.
3. They keep foodstuffs in a perfect state of conservation
The effectiveness of cardboard food packaging in properly preserving products is identical to that of plastic food packaging, or any bio-based or non-bio-based packaging designed to hold food. The cardboard acts as a barrier to impact and friction, and the wide range of references makes it possible to choose a cardboard food packaging completely adapted to the characteristics of the contents. Other complementary parts can also be added to the packaging, such as food film, greaseproof paper or isothermal bags to reinforce the level of protection. 4. Simplify take-away and delivery order preparation tasks
Take-away and delivery establishments have a wide range of special cardboard food packaging for take-away and delivery. They speed up the order preparation process and allow easy and clean transport for customers and delivery staff.
5. Can be customised with corporate messages and colours
Cardboard and paper packaging can incorporate the brand’s identifying colours, logo or other elements. This is an action that facilitates differentiation with the competition, improves the customer experience and works as an advertising asset.
