[SV] How do you pack a painting?

5min read 18/08/2023

Are you an artist wondering how to package a painting? A painting is one of those products that can be difficult to package smoothly. Why? First of all, because fragile paintings can often break during transport. Especially risky transport is a canvas already stretched on prepared frames.
Do you run your own studio or do you sell many paintings or canvases that you want to arrive whole to your customers. In this post you will learn how to pack paintings for safe transport.

Types of products

Running your own studio or photo studio often requires you to deliver the order to the customer. The customer usually does not have the option of personal collection and therefore cannot take full responsibility for the shipping. We are well aware that when packaging the finished product, you want to ensure maximum protection so that the image arrives at its destination in unaltered condition.

What types of paintings can be packed and sent by post or courier? That depends entirely on the service offered. Of the many models, the most common are classic paintings painted on canvas with watercolour or oil paints. Increasingly, we also see finished prints on stretched canvas that mimic a painting. Many manufacturers have chosen to supply popular posters as well. How should a painting be packaged for delivery and should each type of decorative product be prepared in the same way?

Boxes and wrappers for packaging paintings

The best way to prepare different types of artworks for transport is to pack them in specially reinforced cardboard boxes. The products offered by RAJA are cartons of the highest quality, which can be advantageously used for transport. Due to the fragile construction of the paintings, it is worth considering choosing specially reinforced boxes that have been made with 2 or 3 layers. This provides excellent protection against various types of damage, creases and other factors that can affect the quality of the painting placed in the box.

When choosing cartons, it is necessary to take into account their size. Cartons for paintings should be slightly larger than the frame itself and their width should not leave too much free space when the product is inside the package. This ensures that the product does not shift during transport and that it arrives safely at the intended address.

At RAJA, we have telescopic boxes with adjustable height that fit most paintings and artworks to be shipped.

Products for filling and protecting paintings

Although the packaging itself is very robust, it may not be sufficient for the transport of fragile items such as paintings. To ensure maximum protection, it is a good idea to rely on the packaging accessories that you place in your shipment. The first of these are edge and corner protectors, which are made of soft but durable materials. Edge and corner protectors can be advantageously matched to the edges of the fine canvas and applied to each edge. It is ideal for protecting wooden, plastic and metal frames, as well as canvases that have been stretched over the frame and do not require further decoration.

In addition to edge protection, it is a good idea to use the very popular bubble wrap. The latter is available in several different variations. It is very important that it is made of durable polyethylene. This makes it resistant not only to damage, but also to moisture and various types of dirt. In addition, bubble wrap consists of two layers that have been filled with air over time. The latter perfectly absorbs all types of shocks and provides effective protection for each packaged product.

Other things to consider when packaging paintings

Wondering if more than one painting can fit in one shipment? In principle, this should not be a major problem if you pack each painting properly. Remember that paintings can be subject to external damage, but they can also rub against each other in the shipment. Therefore, it is a good idea to include single wells in your shipment in addition to using the protective products. Such a solution allows the shipment to be sent correctly.

The most popular options

If you choose to send your painting via a shipping company, it is important that the painting is properly protected from creases and damage. Which packaging you choose depends on a number of factors. The most important, however, is the format of the canvas or other material you plan to send. When looking for a suitable package, you can choose between:

  • Cardboard boxes of various sizes, which easily accommodate paintings of up to 650 × 450 × 50 mm,
  • classic large cardboard boxes in which you can successfully send more than one picture. Provided, of course, that each one is sufficiently separated,
  • for posters and paintings sent without a rigid frame, choose paper tubes. You can simply roll up the posters and send them to the customer so they receive them in perfect condition.

Last thing to consider before sending your painting

How and in what should the image be packed during transport? In addition to the cartons and protective packaging themselves, other accessories will certainly come in handy to make packing more efficient and provide the courier company with the necessary information about the value of the shipment. For this purpose it is worth buying:

– packing tape, try ours in paper

self-adhesive transport labels

information and warning labels (Caution! Up/down, Fragile!),
