Packaging rules for cosmetics in e-commerce

6min read 20/03/2023

Cosmetics require special packaging. A warehouseman, working in a consignment shop, has to secure plastic bottles with various substances well, as well as glass bottles with perfumes. What does it look like to pack cosmetics for shipping? Are there mandatory protections and fillings without which a consignment of drugstore, pharmacy products cannot be sent?

Cosmetics packaging rules. How do I secure cosmetics for shipment?

A number of basic packaging materials are required to pack cosmetics. We are talking about corrugated cardboard boxes, possibly paper and bubble envelopes. Bubble wrap, stretch film, packing tape and air cushions will also be necessary. What is the importance of each of these materials?

Cardboard cartons and bubble and paper envelopes

Cardboard cartons are the basic packaging into which cosmetics are packed. If there are glass bottles inside, the box alone is not enough. So-called parcel fillers must also appear. A lining of bubble foil or kraft paper provides additional protection against mechanical damage. Non-standard and oversized cosmetics can be packed in non-standard cardboard tubes, cardboard boxes with an automatic bottom.

Most cardboard boxes that will contain cosmetics have the logo of the drugstore, pharmacy or other cosmetic shop printed on the outer layer. Personalised packaging offers the opportunity to promote the brand. They help potential customers to remember a particular drugstore or cosmetics shop. Check out further reasons why you should invest in packs with your company logo.

Bubble and paper envelopes enclose small plastic bottles of cosmetics. They are available in many sizes.

Bubble wrap

Bubble wraphas a wide range of applications. It should be found in every e-commerce warehouse. How do you use it? Surround cosmetics with it, or fill the space between the products and the walls of the carton. Bubble wrap protects plastic and glass packaging from mechanical damage, moisture and extreme temperatures. It has thermal insulating properties.

Stretch film, packing tape, air cushions

Stretch film is a packaging material that is placed on the outside of the parcel as an additional layer of protection. Strong and durable packing tape is useful for sealing the edges of a carton. Air cushions are ideal for filling empty spaces, filling any empty space.

Many of these can be suitable for packaging cosmetics for shipment. We are specifically talking about black stretch film, ecological packaging tape, paper air cushions, cardboard boxes with automatic bottoms, cardboard tubes, Kraft packaging paper.

What role does the cardboard box play in the e-commerce industry? Packaging rules for cosmetics

The appearance of the cardboard box depends on the type and price of the cosmetics purchased. Warehousemen, working in typical drugstores and low-cost online shops, usually do not pay attention to possible decorations – the cardboard box has to be durable, sturdy and the interior properly protected and filled.

The situation is different in the case of cosmetics worth several hundred, several thousand zlotys. The customer expects an exceptional order. He or she is satisfied when he or she receives elegant, decorative packaging (both the box containing the cosmetic and the shipping carton). Conscious cosmetics companies do not skimp on aesthetics. They believe that packaging becomes a component of what you think and how you perceive the brand.

How to package cosmetics step by step?

Every cosmetic product that goes by courier to a customer should be sealed – it should not be allowed to fall out of the packaging during transport. This is a basic rule for storekeepers who work in mail order cosmetics shops and drugstores. Find out about the various rules for packaging cosmetics.

What are the next steps for successfully packing cosmetics for shipping in e-commerce? Here are the next steps:

  1. Securing the cosm etic packaging – regardless of the type of packaging (glass, plastic bottle or container), it should be tightly wrapped in bubble wrap or kraft paper. The protection material cannot be arbitrary – it has to be chosen according to the level of sensitivity of the cosmetic to damage. The final step of permanent protection is to seal the outer layer, e.g. with packing tape – then the foil will not unwind on its own.
  2. Choice of carton – most often storekeepers opt for cartons made of 5-layer corrugated cardboard. An interesting choice are cartons with a double bottom, giving the cosmetics extra cushioning. For small and fragile containers, aesthetically pleasing cut packs should suffice.
  3. Filling the free space in the parcel – of course with environmentally friendly parcel fillers, e.g. air cushions, bubble foil, skropak or SizzlePak, used foil from other shipments. Good fillers provide proper cushioning and also immobilise the cosmetics in the parcel.
  4. Permanently seal and label the carton – the cardboard box with the protected cosmetics should be sealed with professional packing tape, adhesive tape. A warning label (in a visible place) is also essential. The marking informs the courier that the parcel contains fragile, sensitive cosmetics – the parcel should therefore be handled with care.

All procedures, concerning the packaging of cosmetics, depend on the number of cosmetics, their dimensions.

Packing perfume for shipment – does it look different?

The packaging of perfumeslooks very similar to that of other cosmetics. The choice of packaging materials and fillers depends on the size of the order, the dimensions of the perfume.

Small, inconspicuous vials will fit seamlessly into bubble envelopes – preferably with a layer of extra air bubbles. Such packaging, however, does not look as aesthetically pleasing, decorative or inviting as a beautifully packaged cardboard box. Not surprisingly, most mail-order drugstores and beauty shops choose to send perfumes in cardboard boxes (smaller or larger).

Wondering how to package a perfume without a box or with a box? The steps are very simple, almost analogous to what was done before:

  1. Checking that the packaging of the perfume is air tight – if the vial were to unscrew on its own, it could flood and – as a result – destroy the parcel.
  2. Securing the perfume – usually with a thicker layer of bubble wrap or kraft paper. This ensures that the perfume will not be damaged if the package is hit hard or falls from a height (such events are highly likely).
  3. Match the size of the cardboardbox to the size of the perfume – the cardboard packaging should be neither too small nor too large. The empty spaces between the perfume and the edge should be filled with special fillers, which will immobilise the cosmetic inside the carton.
  4. Proper labelling of the consignment – warning labels, right next to the consignment note, are essential. They inform about the contents of the consignment and the need to transport it with special care.
