Inexpensive packaging – great effect with little effort

5min read 21/11/2019
It doesn’t always have to be the most dazzling wrapping paper or the classiest box to present a gift beautifully. To ensure that a gift is well received, even before it is unwrapped, you can resort to a few tricks that cost little money and still create a wow effect. We have collected some particularly effective and, above all, inexpensive packaging ideas that will delight the recipient.

The pragmatist – gift packaging at a reasonable price

What could be more natural than using materials that you no longer need anyway? Old newspapers, magazines and old books are ideal as wrapping paper and cost nothing. Of course, these materials can also be folded and used as a Wrapping paper that it makes a good impression on the recipient and that the recipient is happy about it.

The trick: sophisticated folding techniques, decorations such as bows or flowers made from the inconspicuous material and, last but not least, a feeling for the right paper create a wow effect. The initially inconspicuous exterior is upgraded with a fancy folding technique to create something noble. If, in addition, a book is wrapped in old book pages, the reference to the gift is already shown on the outside without revealing the actual gift.

The Gift Inception – Gift within a Gift

What if the packaging was already part of the gift? The joy would be all the greater! For example, if you give a cookbook in a matching cooking apron, which is also decorated with 2 cooking spoons, the joy of the contents of the packaging increases even more.

There are numerous ways to combine the packaging with the gift. A tea egg as packaging for high-quality tea, a biscuit tin as packaging for the baking mix you have put together yourself and much more. In this way no waste and the packaging is part of the gift.

The ironic – surprise effect thanks to expectation reduction

Newspaper is generally not considered to be of very high value. Even toilet paper has a rather dubious reputation as gift wrapping. However, it is very easy to play with this expectation, because who would expect something particularly noble and expensive in a crumpled-up piece of newsprint? But be careful: the giver should definitely wait until the entire gift has been removed from the wrapping, because it would be more than annoying if the ring for the beloved suddenly ended up in the waste paper.

You should also be able to judge your counterpart well. The recipient should be able to demonstrate a sense of humour. Incidentally, the surprise effect only works if the actual gift is something expensive, such as jewellery or a smartphone, because otherwise the joy is likely to be limited and only reinforces the impression of receiving something cheap.

The classic – the matching collage

If you want something more personal, collages of pictures of past experiences are a good way to wrap a gift. A printout of an article or a piece of writing from days gone by that you associate with something can also create nostalgic feelings even before the gift is unwrapped. For example, an advertising leaflet with a review of a CD can awaken old memories even before the Best of CD is unwrapped and gives a foretaste of the actual contents beforehand. Together with small souvenirs such as the cinema ticket from the joint holiday or the bracelet from the joint all-inclusive holiday, something inconspicuous becomes something very special.

The natural one – what you already have at home

There are things you have at home that are perfect for gift wrapping without having to get them specially. Decorative additions in particular can be staged to great effect. A fir branch from a tree in your own garden, a blackthorn or even acorns are not only very natural, they are also very beautiful to look at as decoration.

Bast also has a rustic charm and is an absolutely natural product that looks great as a gift bow. Appliqués made of leaves and straw or grasses give every gift a rustic look that creates unity, especially when combined with rough wrapping paper.

The wrapping paper roll that’s in the cupboard anyway makes a great gift wrap. Decorate it with coloured pencils and you have your own individual wrapping paper!

A smartly decorated shoe box also serves its purpose for larger gifts and you don’t necessarily have to buy material to make it appealing. Especially if you know that the gift will attract all the attention after unwrapping, a shoe box with applications is sufficient without looking unkind.

The sustainable one – fabric bags

Unwrap, crumple, throw away? That doesn’t have to be the case. If you use sustainable packaging such as reusable fabric bags, you protect the environment and can present another nice gift at the same time. Because with a chic printed cotton cloth bags bag conveys a brand message or can simply be used to convey a saying to the recipient.

When using it again, the recipient will remember the gift and thus establish a connection between the packaging and the unique gift. Once given, always remembered!

Gift wrapping recycling – old makes new

Wrapping doesn’t always have to be a disposable item. If you don’t tear open your gifts completely, but gently open your wrapping paper, you can definitely reuse it.

This has a decisive advantage: you don’t have to spend a cent to get a chic wrapping paper and at the same time you do something for the environment. Especially elaborately designed wrapping paper with an ornamental structure or particularly shiny and splendid paper is also much too good to throw away after a single use. Gift bags and gift boxes with lids are also particularly suitable for multiple use. After all, these would be far too good to throw away after a single use!
