65 years of RAJA – A story of boxes and people

5min read 28/01/2020
RAJA is 1,900 people spread across 22 branches in 18 different countries in Europe. Together we are the European market leader in B2B mail order packaging, offering the largest selection of products for all professional protection, packaging and shipping needs. RAJA has now been active in the market for 65 years. The company owes its origins and its name to two women: Rachel Marcovici and Janine Rocher. In 1954, the two had the idea of selling used cardboard boxes at low prices in France. A concept that worked, the distribution company “Cartons RAJA” (the name is made up of the first two letters of the founders’ first names) was born and grew rapidly.

RAJA is… service quality

From the very beginning, the customer is our focus! RAJA’s mission is to provide the best possible service, because customer satisfaction is our top priority. In addition to high-quality products, this includes above all a comprehensive service promise. We want to inspire our customers by offering them the service they want, no matter how and where they contact us – online or offline. Together we will find the individual solution that suits the customer and their needs. Fast delivery in 24/48 hours is a matter of course for us.

A multinational team works to fulfil this mission. Cross-border cooperation is our daily business, with all its facets! Our product range is diverse, so we also consider a diversity of employees as an enrichment. RAJA is a company that equally unites different languages, cultures, lifestyles and genders, which offers plenty of opportunities and possibilities. Fairness, openness, honesty and equality are central elements. Learning from and with each other is crucial. This keeps us dynamic and allows us to constantly develop.

RAJA is… sustainable

Precisely because of this diversity, RAJA is a company that is also aware of its social responsibility. In particular, the topic of the environment has played an important role at RAJA from the very beginning. But how do packaging and environmental protection go together? It is a fact that packaging is important to protect products from damage and to ship or deliver them undamaged. More and more consumers are aware of environmental issues and packaging has to meet these new expectations: reduced raw material consumption, production from renewable raw materials or from recycled and recyclable materials. For RAJA, it is crucial to act in the spirit of a circular economy, i.e. to reduce, reuse, replace and rely on renewable and recyclable materials. The idea of recycling was the origin of the company, so where possible we offer packaging designed for reuse. In addition, 86% of our products are manufactured in Europe, thus avoiding long transport routes to reduce CO² emissions.
But it is not only at the product level that RAJA pays attention to sustainability. We were also rewarded for our sustainable corporate management with the ISO 14001 certification, which distinguishes the environmental efforts of companies. For the new construction of the German branch in 2012/2013, for example, RAJA oriented itself to sustainable criteria. Compared to conventional heating systems, for example, more than one tonne of CO² can be saved with the building’s climate-friendly heat pump. Electromobility is also promoted: RAJA promotes electromobility through the option of bicycle / e-bike leasing for employees and the installation of charging columns in the employee car park.

RAJA is… committed

As a women-led company from the very beginning, equal opportunities are a central element that is virtually anchored in RAJA’s corporate DNA.

RAJA is first and foremost a story moved by women... a story that began in 1954, more than 60 years ago. RAJA owes its existence to the willpower of Rachel Marcovici, my mother, who had to fight her way through the male-dominated universe of the packaging trade to start her company. I think society still has a lot of progress to make before women have the same rights as men. My wish is to give them my support through the RAJA-Danièle Marcovici Foundation and to reaffirm the continuation of my commitment in a struggle that we are all fighting, to conquer our freedom.Danièle Kapel-Marcovici

In January 2006, Danièle Kapel-Marcovici, Managing Director of the RAJA Group, founded the RAJA-Danièle Kapel-Marcovici Foundation, which promotes respect, solidarity and professional equality for women worldwide. In addition to the focus on professional training and integration, the promotion of women’s rights and protection against violence, education and social support, initiatives, projects or NGOs that support women in environmental protection in the fight against climate change and environmental degradation have been increasingly supported since 2015.

RAJA is… innovative

Service quality, sustainability and commitment – these aspects will continue to accompany RAJA in the future. We think outside the box!

We have enthusiastic customers through enthusiastic employees. That is why RAJA is constantly working on employee satisfaction. And of course we orientate ourselves on customer needs in order to improve our service quality and adapt it accordingly on an ongoing basis. The product range is constantly being expanded, our purchasing department is in close contact with the manufacturers in order to react to changing customer requirements with innovations and new market developments. We look to the future with confidence. We want to consolidate and further expand our position as European market leader: The goal is for all customers across Europe to have access to the same comprehensive range of products and services in the future.
