Cardboard boxes are the most popular packaging material today and it’s no wonder. The boxes are durable thanks to the corrugated cardboard. In this article, we’ll introduce you to what corrugated cardboard is, where it actually comes from and how it’s made. We haven’t forgotten how to recycle the boxes either.
Where did corrugated cardboard come from?
Corrugated paper was patented in England in 1856, where it was used as a liner for tall hats. It wasn’t until 1871 that corrugated cardboard found its use in the packaging industry. This was taken advantage of by Albert Jones of New York, who used double paperboard for bottle wrapping and for glass lantern chimneys. The first machine that produced corrugated board was built in 1874 by G. Smyth and in that year the machine began to produce 3-ply corrugated board as we know it today.

How is corrugated board made?
What is corrugated board? Simply put, it’s a thick paper that is corrugated and both sides are glued together with a smooth thick paper on both sides.
The production of corrugated board is made on a corrugator machine, where the cardboard board is fed into this corrugator and the shape of the corrugations is created. Two outer liners are sanded and firmly adhered to the corrugated material using a strong adhesive.
Is corrugated board recyclable?
Because Rajapack offers 550 box sizes of corrugated cardboard, we need to keep in mind whether these products can be recycled. The boxes are recyclable and also biodegradable. Before throwing the box into the paper ashtray, unfold it first.

There is also the option of not throwing away the boxes and using them as filler. A box shredder can be used for this purpose, which turns unwanted boxes into filler and prevents the goods from being destroyed.
Which box to use?
There are three types of corrugated cardboard:
– three-layer
– five-ply
– seven-ply

Three-layer
Suitable for packaging up to 30kg and for other lightweight products
Five-layer
This type of box is already much more durable than a three layer box. It will reliably protect products up to 70 kg. This type of box is particularly suitable for shipments with heavy storage or transport.
Seven-layer
Extremely durable box type that protects shipments up to 500 kg
