Postnord introduces new packaging rules from 1 January 2019

From 1 January 2019, Postnord will introduce new rules for the packaging of parcels. Where before you paid by weight, as long as parcels stayed within specific measurement requirements, a surcharge will now apply for parcels that require manual handling.

To avoid a surcharge, your parcels must be machine sortable. Parcels can be machine sorted when the following requirements are met:

• Packages should have 5-6 straight and unbroken surfaces.
• Packages must be stackable and thus have a regular shape.
• Packages must be packed in approved packaging all round. Approved packaging is cardboard, plastic, heavy foil and flamingo.

What about my round products?

With the new rules, rolls and tubes, among others, will be subject to the handling fee mentioned above. However, this does not mean that your parcels will automatically be surcharged every time you send elongated and round products such as posters, calendars, etc. You can use triangular or square cardboard tubes, both of which are stackable and meet the requirements of 5-6 unbroken surfaces, as well as being made of approved materials. It makes no difference to your products whether they are rolled into round or square tubes.

No rules without exceptions

If you’re one of those people who particularly pack and send textiles, you might be wondering if flat plastic bags are no longer being sent by Postnord. The answer is no. As we all know, there are exceptions to the rules, and textiles in carrier bags are one of them. You can still send flat plastic bags with textiles without being charged a handling fee. All you have to do is make sure that the bag is packed tightly, i.e. without any loose edges. This way, these packages can also be machine sorted and thus comply with the new requirements.
