EU to ban plastic bags – what are the alternatives?

3min read 17/04/2019

EU Member States have been committed to reducing the use of lightweight plastic bags for years. European Directive 2015/720 stipulates that plastic bags must be at least 50 microns thick. The lightweight bags you receive at the supermarket, for example, will gradually disappear – but what alternatives do you have?

As a trader, you can find alternatives in all kinds of bags from paper to polypropylene bags.

The 5 best alternatives to plastic bags <50 my

Kraft paper bags

Paper bags are a sustainable alternative and the undisputed winner on the environmental front. But are paper bags strong enough? The answer is yes. Kraft paper is a very strong material, a small bag can carry up to 12 kg and a medium bag can easily carry up to 14 kg. But what are the specific advantages of paper bags?

  • Recyclable and biodegradable in just a few months, they are great for the environment.
  • The recycling process is very simple and kraft paper can be reused up to 6 times on average, also a plus on the environmental front.
  • Moreover, the consumer can easily reuse the bag dozens of times without any problems.

Plastic bags in >50 my

FYI: The ban does not apply to all plastic bags. The thicker variants of more than 50 my are still allowed. The higher the my, the thicker the plastic and the more resistant the bags. One of the reasons why the EU has banned plastic bags with a wall thickness of >50 my is that they represent the majority of the total number of discarded plastic bags in the Union, plus they are recycled less frequently by consumers than the slightly thicker plastic bags. So if you're still into plastic, go up to my.

Polyester bags or cotton bags (mule bags)

Fabric bags, such as polyester, are also an alternative. Polyester is a common fabric in the textile industry, it resists wrinkles and retains its original shape perfectly. It absorbs almost no moisture and resists sunlight. Fabric bags are durable and they are frequently used in the fashion industry, among others, which lists a few clear advantages that are worth taking note of:

  • Your end user always has a shopping bag, possibly with your logo, at hand - in other words, a walking advertising pillar.
  • In addition, the bag can be used over and over again, almost indefinitely, thus reducing the purchase of multiple bags.
  • It is practical and can be used in a variety of contexts, such as a bag, sports bag, shopping net, etc.
