Logistics in a time of crisis

2min read 06/04/2020

The Corona epidemic has completely changed our daily lives and we are all facing some unforeseen challenges. For many e-retailers in Denmark this means increased activity and fortunately the government and the Danish Road Administration have secured the transport of goods both domestically and across borders. Among other things, the rules on weekly rest have been suspended to prevent a shortage of drivers:

“In the period from 13 March 2020 to 11 April 2020 inclusive, the rules on weekly rest – i.e. on the observance of the so-called regular weekly rest of at least 45 hours and reduced weekly rest of at least 24 hours, in accordance with Article 8(6) of the Driving and Rest Time Regulation – are suspended for all national goods transport in Denmark.”

However, no one can predict how the situation will develop in the near future. Therefore, it is important as a company to take certain precautions to ensure continued operations. We have compiled a list of some basic things worth considering.

1. Delivery times

Be aware of an increased delivery time both for your own shipments, but also from your suppliers. Here at RAJA we continue to promise a delivery time of 48/72 hours. If you are dealing with other companies, you should also be aware that there may not always be someone at the address to receive the goods. Therefore, it is a good idea to inform your customers to be extra careful to avoid too many returns.

2. Storage capacity

If you have excess capacity in your warehouse, it may be a good idea to use it now. Goods that are currently stored with external suppliers should also be brought to your warehouse. This means you have a buffer for the next few months, and that way you’re covered if orders suddenly start pouring in. Packaging can also be kept in the warehouse for longer periods. Even tape can last 6 months without any loss in quality adhesiveness.

3. Planning

As I said, the Corona epidemic has a big impact on delivery times, among other things, so planning can make the difference. However, it must be said that planning can be difficult at this time when we are very uncertain about developments. One thing that can be done, however, is to think about ordering well in advance. If you order from your suppliers well in advance, you can better ensure that the manufacturers/transport can keep up and that you get delivery to your own customers on time.

4. Employee safety and continuity of operations

There are two protective measures that apply in workplaces during this period: distance – where possible – and good hygiene. Working from home is also a very important step in continuing operations for many businesses. But for many, it can be difficult to make a daily routine work optimally. It requires a lot of planning and some communication. In terms of planning, it is important to have a contingency plan in place in case the situation changes further. For example, what should happen in case of illness?
