Tissue paper is a great material for gift wrapping, plus it helps you protect your products, even fragile and delicate surfaces.
Find out how it came into being, what its characteristics are and all the interesting facts about this product:
So, what is tissue paper?
Quite simply, it is a super lightweight type of paper usually produced from recycled materials.
One can speak of tissue paper when its grammage is between 18 and 50 g/m².
Grammage refers to the ratio between the weight of the paper and its surface area.
All types of paper come in a variety of thicknesses measured in grams per square metre, the lower the number, the thinner the paper. Generally, tissue paper ranges from 10 to 35 g/m². For comparison, office printer paper is generally 70 to 100 g/m² and greeting cards are more than 250 g/m².
But let’s start at the beginning: when was tissue paper invented?
Answering this question is not easy because its history is not well documented. The first known use of paper as a packaging and protection material was in China in the 2nd century BC.
Over the years, packaging evolved and from the paper originally used for wrapping and protection came the tissue paper we know and use today.
The invention of tissue paper can be traced back to 1750 when the Englishman John Baskerville introduced a new technique to obtain a paper without virgin marks. For more than 25 years, the English industry had a monopoly until 1777, when the Frenchman Pierre Montgolfier (father of the Montgolfier brothers) succeeded in obtaining perfectly smooth sheets, which became known as tissue paper.

Tissue paper is manufactured using cellulose pulp (made from wood fibre) or recycled materials such as newspapers. The wet pulp is then rolled on a machine until the desired thickness is reached. This mixture is then steam-dried and rolled into huge cylinders ready to be cut to size.
